What does the role involve?

The overall purpose of this placement is to propel the Vocational Training Centre into the future by supporting and training the staff and students in researching, developing, teaching and fabricating innovative and practical products for people and organisations in the local community and nearby town of Calabar. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Reviewing and building on the current curriculum to train teachers and students in advanced mechanical engineering/metal welding techniques
  • Training teachers and students to conduct market research so they can develop innovative and practical products to generate income and serve unmet market needs
  • Supporting the development of a technical resource library for the Vocational Training Centre
  • Building a network with local businesses to increase employment opportunities for graduating students, as well as to improve curriculum

Skills, qualifications and experience required

You will have a degree in Mechanical or Metal Engineering, with at least three years demonstrated professional experience of using a welding machine, angle grinding machine, oxygen and sateline bottle (no gas).

In addition, a certificate in health and safety management is desirable.

will have some experience of mentoring or training others and have experience managing a small or your own business, with understanding of marketing products.

You will be a self-starter who can take initiative and have the ability to lead and motivate a team.

Someone who is creative, innovative, and forward thinking in terms of product development for the developing world is most desirable.

You will be adaptable to working and living with limited resources.

Akpap Okoyong is located 55km North of Calabar (about a 1-hour drive), which is the state capital of Cross River State. Akpap Okoyong has a daily market selling basic foodstuffs such as rice, beans, fish, and waterleaf.

We’ll ask you to commit to at least 24 months to make a sustainable contribution to our development goals. In return, we’ll provide you with extensive training before your placement, and our financial package includes a local living allowance, return flights, accommodation and insurance. When you return to your home country, we'll support you to resettle.
