Yalelo Ltd. is quickly revolutionizing the production of sustainable fish in Africa.  We are an energetic for-profit venture, established to provide a reliable supply of affordable fish to the Zambian mass-market.  Our mission is to improve the dietary quality and food security of millions of people.  Yalelo is head-quartered in Lusaka, Zambia and was established in 2011.  During 2013 headcount is expected to increase from 70 to 200 direct employees.

 

We are looking for a great COO to work closely with CEO Bryan McCoy (ex-Bain, Wharton MBA) and hold broad responsibility in developing, executing and managing the Yalelo business plan.  This new role has a particular emphasis on operational performance, team coordination and growth-management. 

 

Responsibilities of the COO: 

  1. Advise the CEO and Directors on key planning issues and make recommendations on important business decisions 
  2. Strategic planning and resource allocation 
  3. Develop, establish, and direct execution of operating policies and procedures to support overall company policies and objectives.
  4. Manage Yalelo strategy implementation, in particular regarding Yalelo budgets and timelines 
  5. Ensure all department heads are fully informed of operational objectives 
  6. Set operational and / or performance goals for each department which are aggressive, achievable and tied to long-term goals 
  7. Hire, train, motivate, direct, coach, evaluate and retain high performing staff
  8. Take charge in high-priority crises

 

Qualifications:

·         Graduate level degree from a leading university

·         2+ years management experience

·         High-growth start-up experience helpful

·         Willingness to relocate to Lusaka, Zambia for a minimum of 2 years 

 

Character and skills:

·         Creative, resourceful and practical

·         Willingness and ability to learn new skills

·         Ability to build and lead a high‐performance staff team

·         Excellent communication and English language skills

·         A good attitude and saint-like patience!

 

Knowledge of aquaculture is not required.  Character and experience are the key determinants of suitability.
