Year Here

London, United Kingdom

Recommend to a friend:

A year to test and build solutions to some of society's toughest problems.

About us

Year Here is a postgraduate course in social innovation based in London.

Unlike a traditional Master's degree, Year Here is immersive and action-oriented. Our Fellows try their hand at building creative responses to social problems, supported by industry mentoring and a rigorous social innovation curriculum. They go on to found some of the most promising social impact startups in the country.

Our ventures

Some of the 12 social ventures that we’ve launched are:

  • Birdsong - a fashion brand selling clothes handcrafted by women’s groups – from elderly knitters to migrant seamstresses – with a ‘no sweatshops, no photoshop’ ethos.
  • Cracked It – training for young people who are involved in gangs or are at risk of school exclusion to fix cracked iPhones, as an entrepreneurial route away from gang crime
  • Chatterbox – a language tuition and cultural training service that gives refugees meaningful paid work opportunities in the UK.
  • Fat Macy’s – a roving restaurant that trains homeless Londoners to run supper clubs, with profits going into a savings scheme helping them raise a deposit for their first flat

The story so far

Year Here was launched in 2013 and, since then, has run six programmes with 98 Fellows.

Our Fellows have collectively contributed 60,000 hours in frontline services – including homeless shelters, care leavers' services and pupil referral units – and launched 12 ventures that have been backed by The Observer, Ashoka, UnLtd, Nesta and many more.

In 2017, we're growing – building the staff team, taking on more faculty and working with more Fellows than ever.

Year Here is a social enterprise; meaning that we are a company that exists to bring about positive change in society rather than to maximise shareholder profits.
