Contact Us and Frequently Asked Questions

Greetings! If you are an employer looking to reach Escape the City members and you'd like to contact us, please email team@escapethecity.org and we'll get back to you immediately (or click here for commonly asked questions).

If you are getting in touch for any another reason please scan the FAQ below. You may find we've already answered your question. Otherwise, please message us on Facebook or Twitter (much easier and quicker than email for you and us!).

In the meantime, have an excellent day and good luck with your plans.

Please tell us who you are and what you're looking for

How should I use your site?

The whole Escape the City concept is aimed at helping you answer that big question: "if not this, then what?"

Everything we do is designed to help smart, ambitious people like you make big career transitions.

We want you to use us to find an exciting new job, plot your own startup, or to plan on a big adventure.

All of these are good places to start:

The core of Escape the City is your profile. This explains who you are and what you've done. More importantly, it outlines what you want to do next with your career (your aspirations).

You are joining Escape at a time that the platform is undergoing some really exciting changes. Shortly your profile will be able to drive proper engagement (with escapees and employers).

In the meantime, have a browse through the site and be proactive in reaching out to organisations and people who you think might be able to help you.

All the best,

Rob, Dom and Mikey

How can I interact with other members?

The Community section of Escape the City helps you connect with likeminded people. We're all here for the same reason!

In the community section you'll find:

  • People looking to find jobs in new industries and countries
  • People starting businesses seeking advice and partners
  • People planning big adventures seeking co-conspirators

It is all about an exchange of value. The more you help people, the more your own plans will be helped in return.

Learn from people who have already escaped, answer questions, ask your own, search for people near you or people like you, and check out the amazing list of everyone's aspirations.

In order to interact with other members you need to have at least the introduction section of your profile completed and shared.

The best thing to do, if there's something specific you want help with, is to Post a Question.

All the best,

RobDom and Mikey

How can I contact you guys?

The best way to get a really speedy response from the Esc team is to send us a tweet or post your message on our Facebook page.

Also, please have a look down the list of FAQs immediately to your left, you may find that your question has already been answered.

If you're absolutely bursting to contact us in private you can email team@escapethecity.org, but please do this as a last resort as we get a lot of emails and prefer Facebook and Twitter.

All the best,

RobDom and Mikey

Can I meet someone at Escape the City?

Much as we'd love to say yes to every request for coffee (and cake) we have to be disciplined on this front - otherwise we'd never get anything done (and be on a permanent caffeine high!).

However, we're always up for helping out with your escape or hearing from you if you're an ally in the struggle to do work that matters. Here are some of the ways you can meet us...

Come meet us at an Esc event?

The best place to meet a member of our team in person is at one of our London events (more being scheduled shortly).

Come for lunch in our office?

Having said that, we are also introducing a system whereby Esc members can come and have lunch with us in our office in London (Battersea) in exchange for customer research!

This involves helping us with some testing and speaking to us about your career aspirations. If you are an aspiring escapee and are interested in this - click here

All the best,

RobDom and Mikey

When is your next event?

We run a series of evening events in London. Some are pure meetups but most have some form of guest speaker or panel.

Our themes include escaping the corporate world, finding jobs in exciting areas, starting businesses and adventures.

We also run longer-form weekend and day-long courses (these include: The Startup MBA and The Tech MBA).

This is where our London events are announced (more being scheduled shortly). Click here to read more about our courses.

Sad that we aren't yet running events in your city or country? Click here to find out more about our international expansion plans.

Can I apply to work at Escape the City?

Our team is at full capacity and we don't have any immediate plans to hire new people. However, if any of the following roles appeal to you please email your CV to applications@escapethecity.org.

  • Front-end developer with Ruby and strong UX experience
  • Back-end Ruby developer wanting to build something awesome
  • Paid graduate internship (learn the ropes, help us out)
  • Paid front-end web development / digital design internship
We can't promise you a response immediately but when a vacancy becomes available your CV will be at the top of those that we review before we put up a listing.

Firstly, thank you!

Please submit feedback, ideas, and comments via the 'Feedback' tab on the left-hand side of every page on the site.

Can I share something with you?

Thank you for thinking of us.

If you'd like to share some interesting / useful content...

If you've escaped and want to share your story we'd love it if you were up for our online escape interview - here.

We're a small team and we're extremely busy so we're afraid we can't respond to individual requests for sharing things.

If the content is useful we'll certainly save it in our resources library and share with our community via our various channels.

If you are mainly trying to plug or promote your own product or service I'm afraid we'll probably gratefully decline.

If you would like to submit a photo for our Big Escape Picture in the newsletter please just post it on our Facebook page - click here.

We can't respond to individual requests (we receive a lot of photos!) but if you'd like to include your name and relevant links those would be included in the newsletter.

Thanks so much for this.

All the best,

RobDom and Mikey

Want to ask us a question? (@escthecity / Facebook/EscapetheCity)

When are you coming to my city?

We get emails every week from people all around the world asking to be our partners in Boston / Paris / Berlin / Cape Town / Sydney / Hong Kong / [insert your big city here]. It's incredible.

We're extremely flattered by the enthusiasm and we're well aware of how much of a global phenomenon this desire to escape corporate jobs is. Unfortunately we're not in a position to discuss business partnerships, franchises or jobs.

However, there is a great way you could be involved...

As we build out the next phase of the website we plan to provide an area for people in different cities around the world to connect with each other and we are hoping that this will happen online and offline.

Escape the City itself started offline in London with after-work meetups... likeminded people would get together and discuss alternative careers, entrepreneurialism and adventure. Sometimes with guest speakers, sometimes just networking.

If you'd like to be considered as your city or town's Head Escape Artist (voluntary community organiser) please just fill in this form letting us know. You can watch this video for a brief overview. If you just want to vote for your city fill in this short form.

We're hoping to give you the tools to organise talks, Q&A's and social events for aspiring corporate escapees who live near you. When we are closer to launching our Cities feature we'll get back in touch with a proper Guidance Manual and Application Form.

Thanks for bearing with us as we build out our platform. We'd love to have you on board!

All the best,

RobDom and Mikey

I escaped! Can I share my story?

Absolutely fantastic news! Congratulations. Nothing makes our day more than reading about someone who has decided to navigate the same terrifying and exciting escape trajectory as us.

1. We'd love it if you'd like to share your story-so-far on our site via our online escape interview. Your experiences and advice will really help the next wave of corporate escapees... and we've got +100,000 of them waiting to read your thoughts.

Take the escape interview - click here.

2. Did you escape as a result of an opportunity or connection you found on our site? Drop us an email to let us know and we'll send you an Esc t-shirt in exchange for a testimonial!

How can I learn about the Escape story?

The three of us escaped the corporate world in order to start this community and what we're learning along the way is extremely relevant to the people we are building this platform for.

We write a regular blog called Stop Dreaming, Start Planning. In it we share 'our story and some things we're learning' (you can subscribe for emails with new posts - here).

You can read Dom's escape story here (Rob and Mikey are still finishing theirs - lazy gits). We've got a series of blog posts charting the early days of Escape the City here (we'll add to it soon, promise).

You can read about how we raised £600,000 from 395 Escape the City members via equity crowdfunding here. This is a summary of we learnt about fundraising.

Want to start a business?

These resources are from the top startup gurus in the States. Understand and apply all this and you'll be a million miles ahead of where we were when we started...

We'll add to this page as our story continues, as we write more blog posts, and when Rob and Mikey complete their interviews!

All the best,

RobDom and Mikey

Still need a hand?

How can I get a permanent page?

We offer permanent employer pages that help organisations like yours find Escape the City members. They are currently free for a limited amount of time.

We are assembling a directory of the most progressive and exciting employers in the world. Having an page allows you to promote your employer brand and 'hire' when you're not even hiring.

If you are on the look out for smart people and could be recruiting for full-time jobs, part-time gigs or volunteering opportunities then we'd love to consider you for an employer page.

NB: These pages are for employers only. If you are an adventure or education company and want to promote something - click here.

Can I advertise for volunteers?

We offer free listings to organisations listing volunteer opportunities. Many of our members are looking for chances to do work with a positive impact - both short and long-term.

NB: We don't currently accept pay-to-volunteer opportunities and we have a strict no-unpaid-internship policy.

If you are looking for volunteers with professional backgrounds and experience, we'd love to help! Please proceed via the links below.

What can I do next?

Still need a hand?

Can I advertise for graduate interns?

We have a strict no-unpaid-internship policy.

We have adopted this approach because unpaid internships are illegal and because we feel that if someone is going to properly work for you (as opposed to gaining a small amount of experience) then they deserve to receive at least a living wage.

It is illegal in the UK to advertise for or 'employ' unpaid interns. This PDF has more information.

If you are looking to hire a graduate or paid intern you are very welcome to use our site. We have a strong graduate demographic using us to look for exciting entry-level opportunities.

If you are looking to get someone to work for you for free we encourage you to structure it as unpaid work experience (maximum duration of 4 weeks) or as a voluntary role (for not for profits only).

NB: We moderate all listings submitted through the site and won't publish roles that are clearly unpaid internships dressed up as voluntary positions!

We appreciate that this isn't always black and white but we strongly feel that graduate interns deserve to be paid for their work.

Still need a hand?

Very sorry to hear you are struggling. We are always on hand to help with the process of uploading listings or pages to our site.

If you are struggling with any stage of the upload process please just contact us via the routes below.

What can I do next?

How can I submit feedback?

We are a small team who strive to deliver a great service and apologise wholeheartedly in the rare cases that we don't.

We love feedback and we are constantly working to improve our platform and services. Please let us know how your experience with us has been - the good, bad and ugly.

What can I do next?

  • You can submit feedback via the 'Feedback' tab on the left-hand side of every page on the site.
  • You can also email us directly - feedback@escapethecity.org

How can I share a success story?

We absolutely love success stories and we've facilitated some great matches over the past few years.
