Ex-lawyer starts PR company and online business, www.BragItUp.com

Jim Brough quit a City corporate boutique law firm in 2006 to start a PR consultancy. Working from home and spending time with his new born son led Jim to move to France with his family.

Whilst in France, Jim set up http://www.BragItUp.com" rel="nofollow">www.BragItUp.com, a website that tracks down the week's top ten deals. These might be fashion, tech or entertainment related deals.

How I can help Esc members

I would be happy to talk to any Escape the City members about leaving the City and setting up an online business.

Currently...

Running a website involves constant work. It could be trying to obtain PR coverage for http://www.BragItUp.com" rel="nofollow">BragItUp.com, updating the site or writing emails to our 20,000 subscribers - there is always something to do.

The aim is to keep growing the database by speaking to more journalists about our deals and increasing our social media exposure. So expect to see more BragItUp deals on Twitter and improvements to our Amazon Discount Finder iPhone app (which The Sunday Telegraph included in it's Top 5 apps).

We are also looking at improving our Browser apps which should lead to greater exposure.

Before I escaped...

Before I set up www.BragItUp.com I was a corporate lawyer, and then after quitting law I set up a PR consultancy with my wife. This enabled us to work from home and then from France.

My moment of truth...

When friends came to visit us we would always have the 'Dragon's Den' discussion where we would all talk about our Million Dollar ideas. My idea was BragItUp.com.

It was at the end of one of these chats, that I realised, "I'm going to do it."

Planning for it...

I knew about setting up companies from my law experience, and having worked with a number of businesses on their PR and marketing campaigns (and given them advice about how to improve). So I knew the basics but then needed to get it up and running.

Like an essay, it is better to get something down on paper (or online) and then tinker with it.

It took a couple of redesigns and a great deal of trial and error to find out exactly how our www.BragItUp.com would work.

The worst and best bits...

The worst part of going it alone is the sudden loss of security - that regular paycheck coming in is very important.

However, the benefits of working from home, taking holidays when you want, dropping your son off at school (and picking him up), and seeing actual tangible benefits of everything that you do, is more important.

Best advice...

The best advice I heard was surprisingly on the follow-up show to The Apprentice. One entrepreneur guest said that it took him a few failures before he came up with his winning idea and it is very rare to strike gold first time round.

This makes you feel less bad when you hit a few obstacles along the way!

Useful resources and information...

Having a good accountant is fantastic as they can take all of that pressure off you.
