DevOps Lead – Introduction

With an exciting scale up plan backed by ambitious and supportive investors, we are now looking for a DevOps Lead to support the DevOps engineering aspects of all in-house developed services and the configuration of procured systems.

DevOps Lead – The Role

  • Build and implement new development tools & infrastructure
  • Understand the needs of stakeholders & convey them to developers
  • Work on ways to automate & improve development & release processes
  • Test & examine code written by others & analyse results
  • Ensure that systems are safe/ secure
  • Identify technical problems & develop software updates/fixes
  • Work with software developers/engineers to ensure that development follows established processes & works as intended
  • Plan projects & input on project management decisions
  • Help maintain software development documentation & infrastructure on AWS/Azure/GCP

DevOps Lead – About You

  • Experience as a DevOps engineer or in a similar software engineering role
  • Proficiency with Git & GitHub workflows
  • Good knowledge of JavaScript or Python
  • Able to select & deploy appropriate CI/CD tools: e.g., GitHub actions, Azure DevOps etc.
  • Working knowledge of databases like SQL, NoSQL
  • Good knowledge & experience with Terraform
  • Experience with Kubernetes
  • Experience in AWS or Azure
  • Good at problem-solving & working as part of a team

DevOps Lead – Desirable Skills

  • Experience with any workflow software
  • Experience with graph databases
  • Experience with machine learning
  • Used to monitoring & measuring customer experience & KPIs

This role has a UK based contract and as such, you must have the right to live and work in the UK.  You’ll be required to work at your contracted office, 1 Occam Court, Surrey Research Park, Guildford, GU2 7HJ and will need to be able to commute to this location.

CONTEXT OF ROLE

MAIN PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE JOB  

The successful candidate will work closely with other members the IT on managing the internal and multi cloud estate and relevant system administration. The successful candidate will manage the outsourced IT operations function under the guidance of the CTO. 

Applicants should have experience in GCP, AWS & Azure.  

Any understanding of ITIL processes for Incident, Problem & Change management would be useful. 

The successful applicant will be comfortable working independently and as part of a wider team. They will be required to work closely with all members of NatureMetrics internal software development and bioinformatics functions.   

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES  

  • Building and setting up new development tools and infrastructure for our multi-cloud environments for our digital platform, mobile app, bioinformatics workflows and core business systems 
  • Managing security audits and credential management and secrets & vaults 
  • Manage & co-ordinate all software releases. 
  • Continuous improvement of development and release processes. 
  • Testing and examining code written by others and analysing results. 
  • Ensuring that systems are safe and secure against cybersecurity threats 
  • Identifying technical problems and developing software updates and 'fixes' 
  • Working with different software development teams and software engineers to ensure that development follows established processes and works as intended 
  • Planning out projects and being involved in project management decisions. 
  • Working with Google Big Query, Neo4J, Nextflow, React.js, AWS Cognito, Azure APIs, OAuth2 amongst other systems and packages 
  • Ability to support back-end development teams in R, Python or Go when demand arises 

  

PERSON SPECIFICATION   

EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS & KNOWLEDGE  

  • Knowledge of ITIL would be useful as would any Google, AWS or Azure certifications 
  • Previous experience of working in Development Operations
