What will you be doing?

Raising Futures Kenya supports young people in Kenya to become self-reliant and live free from poverty, through technical vocational training and business skills courses, and specialised support such as counselling. We are in Year 2 of our 5 year Strategic Plan, where the focus is on shifting the decision making power to our partner NGO in Kenya. Ultimately our long-term goal is to not be needed, but we realise the funding landscape is a long way off that at the moment. As Treasurer you will work alongside the CEO to oversee the sound financial management of the charity finances, adhering to relevant regulatory compliance. You will prepare financial updates for Board meetings, ensuring fellow Trustees are also able to understand the current financial situation. You will work with the CEO to improve systems, processes and reporting. You will monitor financial risks and advise the Board when action should be taken. We are a financially stable charity with over 3 months unrestricted reserves and a strong budgeting process. Volunteering your time as a Board member is a two-way street, we want to ensure you get something from it too, so we'll do all we can to ensure you get any experience, training or skills you'd like. If you're passionate about being part of an organisation who has the respect and wellbeing of the students we work alongside at the core of everything we do, then we look forward to hearing from you. Please see the detailed role description for more information about our charity and what the role entails. We look forward to hearing from you.

What are we looking for?

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience; Essential:

Competent and experienced in handling finances, in a professional capacity, for minimum 3 years. Able to create comprehensive financial reports using management accounts, ensuring they are in a format which can be easily understood by other Board members. Availability to commit to approximately 6 hours a month and attend Board meetings. Honesty and integrity. We’re a values led organisation and want to ensure that everyone who joins us shares our values of honesty and integrity. Teamwork and commitment. We’re a small organisation and rely on each other to lean in and play a part in achieving our objectives. Passionate about furthering the impact of our work, in whatever way you can. For example utilising your networks to share the work we do or to seek donations.

Desirable:

Accountancy qualification. Experience working with dual currencies. Knowledge and experience of international development, particularly in education or young people or programmes in Kenya. An understanding of the voluntary sector and/or previous experience as a Trustee. We are always looking for candidates who have lived experience of Kenya, East Africa and/or Technical Vocational Training.

We are committed to a culture of inclusivity. We are able to grow and learn better if we have a diverse organisation formed of the collective sum of individual differences, lived experiences, knowledge and self-expression. We don’t want to exist in an echo chamber. In recruiting for our team we welcome the unique perspectives you can bring in terms of culture, education, opinions, ethnicity, race, sex, gender identity, values, age, religion, disability, sexual orientation, beliefs, nation of origin and languages spoken.

What difference will you make?

As one of our Trustees you'll be part of an award-winning small charity who is leading the way in ethical development, primarily by actively shifting power and decision making to our incredible partner NGO in Kenya. We're a small charity but we definitely have a big impact and want to share our learning and knowledge with other NGOs who want to follow the same path of shifting power. We don't just talk about what we want to do, we get it done.
