Role Summary

Role Requirements

The British Museum is undergoing an extraordinary transformation, both intellectual and physical, making it a significant time to join our team. As the Head of Masterplan Conservation, you will lead a specialist team of conservators supporting the Masterplan. This role is crucial in managing and planning the Conservation Team's support of the Masterplan, Museum Operating Plan, Public Programme, and all relevant Museum strategies in line with the Conservation Policy.

The role involves developing operational plans that support the preservation, conservation, and research strategies of Conservation, Collection Care, and the wider Museum. You will manage and deliver these plans, ensuring regulatory compliance, including security, health, and safety. Leading and motivating a team with a range of conservation specialisms, you will maintain high standards of conservation and related collection care. Additionally, you will ensure the delivery of comprehensive and tailored preventive conservation training across all Departments that operate with and around the collections.

To be successful in this role, you should have a recognized degree in museum conservation, conservation science, or equivalent, with membership to relevant professional organizations. You should be a recognized expert in the contemporary principles and practice of conservation, nationally and internationally, with extensive relevant preventive conservation experience. Project management skills and previous management experience within a heritage organization are essential. You should be able to think creatively and strategically, develop new concepts and approaches, and have excellent communication skills.
