The British Museum is excited to announce recruitment for a Project Curator: Iron Age and Roman Coin Finds. This role is part of the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) – a project to record archaeological finds made by the public to advance knowledge – but will be based in, and under the management of, the British Museum’s department of Money and Medals. The PAS has recorded over 1.8 million finds, many of which are Iron Age and Roman coins (see finds.org.uk).

The main roles of the postholder will be to ensure the consistency and accuracy of Iron Age and Roman coin data recorded by the Scheme’s network of locally based Finds Liaison Officers (FLOs), assisting in the delivery of training of FLOs. Additionally, they will support the Curator: Iron Age and Roman Coin Finds in research and publication of coin finds data from England and Wales. This data is transforming our knowledge of Iron Age and Roman Britain and we are keen that this postholder helps drive that work going forward.

Key areas of responsibility include ensuring the accuracy and consistency of Iron Age and Roman coins recorded onto the PAS database (finds.org.uk/database), assisting in the delivery of training to identify and record coin finds, supporting research and publication projects on coin finds data, and supporting the Money and Medals hoards team cataloging larger coin assemblages. The role also involves working as a team member with colleagues within and beyond the department, and supporting the general day-to-day running of the department, including answering enquires from the public. The role will act as an advocate for the Museum and Portable Antiquities Scheme.

We ask that applicants are educated to degree-level or equivalent in history, archaeology, or a similar discipline. You should also have an excellent knowledge of Iron Age and (particularly) Roman coins, as well as experience of documenting and cataloguing coin finds within a museum or archaeological setting. Experience working in a museum environment or with the Portable Antiquities Scheme is desirable. Some experience of management issues (people, projects, budgets) and a record of publications in peer-reviewed journals are advantageous.

The British Museum offers a competitive benefits package including generous annual leave allowance of 25 days (rising to 30 days after long service) plus 2.5 privilege days and additional bank holidays, membership of the civil service pension scheme, free entry to a wide range of museums and exhibitions all over the world, participation in private and public Museum activities, interest-free travel, bicycle and rental deposit loans, wide range of training and professional and personal development opportunities, Employee Assistance Programme, wellbeing initiatives, family friendly leave, subsidised staff canteen, and discounts on gift shop purchases.
