Launched in 2019, Taptap is tapping into a transformative shift in global finance: from banks to phones. The Role

You’ll be our Legal Director / General Counsel and lead all legal aspects of expansion into new markets, new product launches, equity and debt financing, meeting our ongoing regulatory obligations employment, data protection and IP. You’ll work closely with all business functions and be an expert at communicating legal issues to non-lawyers and balancing business and legal perspectives. You’re an experienced manager who can manage a team of lawyers effectively. You’re a self-starter who is comfortable stepping out of your comfort zone to drive business growth by tackling the laws and regulations of new markets (with support from local counsel of course!).

Your responsibilities will include

  • Day-to-day leadership and strategy setting for our legal team, starting with a team of 3 lawyers
  • Leading expansion into new markets and product spaces, including regulatory applications and regulator engagement, hiring compliance officers and drafting compliance policies/procedures, and all the employment law aspects of working in a new country
  • Making sure we comply with employment laws in 7+ markets and that our policies are compliant, on-market, and followed correctly
  • Ensuring data protection and security requirements are satisfied in our product and tech implementation and actioning any potential IP infringements
  • Ensuring we provide high-quality support to the rest of the business on contracting with vendors, diligence of partners, cap table management, board management, and group governance

You

  • Are legally qualified in the UK or US
  • Have several years of in-house experience and are at least 6 years’ PQE; FinTech experience a bonus
  • Ideally have regulatory experience
  • Have managed people in-house
  • Are excited by new challenges, like understanding laws in new markets and around new financial products
  • Have the ability to work independently and juggle competing priorities
  • Are an exceptional communicator and able to explain complex legal concepts in simple terms
  • Can move quickly without that affecting the quality of your work 
  • Are fluent in English; French a plus
