The Escape 100: The top 5 highest scoring organisations for their impact on the planet

There are some organisations that are paving the way for ambitious change through their core values, sustainable ways of working, environmental best practices, and missions for the future.

The climate and biodiversity crisis are challenges that we’re facing not just in the coming decades but crucially, in the coming years. And for an ever-increasing number of  job-seekers, working in an organisation with aligned values to them is becoming more and more important – especially when it comes to sustainability and the environment.

There are some organisations that are paving the way for ambitious change through their core values, sustainable ways of working, environmental best practices, and missions for the future.

In this year’s Escape 100 campaign, we set out to highlight the organisations that really came out on top based on their Impact, People, Mission, Planet, Innovation, and B-Corp scores. They were selected from 13,000 company nominations, and passed through a rigorous 3-month application, including employee reviews and votes.

And one area that had an even higher weighting and importance than ever before was the extent to which they positively impact the planet.

Read on to learn more about the top 5 winners in the Escape 100 Top Planet category.

Love The Oceans

First up is Love The Oceans, a non-profit marine conservation organisation working in Jangamo Bay, Mozambique. And let’s just say they are making waves (excuse the pun) when it comes to saving our oceans and healing our planet.. Their mission is first and foremost is to protect vulnerable marine animals in Mozambique through a bottom-up, community-led approach – primarily to secure a more sustainable future and protect biodiversity.

They were recently recognised as 1 of 15 global grassroots #forcesforchange by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, receiving international recognition for their work.

If you’re passionate about community building and protecting our oceans, there are few making such a huge impact as Love The Oceans. Take a look at their current projects and find out more here. FF7E5DD0-F297-4316-9F3B-D757CC163677.png

Earthly

We all know that business activity has an immense impact on the natural environment. Earthly are on a mission to help businesses remove at least 1 Gigatonne (1 billion tonnes) of carbon by 2030, via their hand-picked and science-backed projects, ranging from kelp farms off the UK coast to regenerative farming in Tanzania to rainforests in Peru. They’re already used by giants like LÓreal, Crowdcube, CaixaBank, and Virgin Racing, amplifying their impact and co-benefits for society and wildlife. But that’s not all - this B-Corp certified company cares for its team with a remote-first approach, a 4-day working week, co-working options, budget for mental and physical health, coaching, paid volunteering days, and much more. In fact, Earthly scored as one of the highest this year for their people-first approach, with their team members saying “it is the kind of workplace, you can't wait for Monday morning to start the new week”. Not bad!

Honest Mobile

Two words that you thought couldn't go together, honesty and mobiles. As a conservative estimate we have all spent 70% of our lives on hold to mobile phone companies while they overcharge us, globally, to the tune of £182m a year. Honest Mobile are the opposite. Their mission is to create a network that is good for people and the planet while providing human service. Unsurprisingly they're also a B corp, a Best Startup award winner and a carbon negative company. If you want to work for a company doing all they can for the planet while also disrupting the opaque world of technology, Honest Mobile are pretty much the best there is.

The Electric Car Scheme

A large number of people reading this will be aware of the UK's Cycle to Work scheme, which gives employees a cost-effective method of getting a new bike. Well, the chaps at The Electric Car Scheme have gone and done the same for the electric car - setting up a salary sacrifice scheme for SMEs to help employees save 30-60% on any electric car.

Unsurprising, then, that they were one of the highest-scoring organisations when it came to the 'Planet' section of the Escape 100. One of the primary benefits of driving an electric car is that they have zero carbon emissions in comparison to petrol and diesel. Due to the renewable fuel choices such as wind, solar or even hydro, electric cars are also significantly more sustainable. Need any more reasons to find out more?

OLIO

OLIO connects neighbours with each other and local businesses so surplus food can be shared. This could be food nearing its sell-by date, spare home-grown vegetables, or the groceries in your fridge when you go away. Their vision is for millions of hyper local food sharing networks all around the world. Whatsmore, they have a pending B-Corp certification, are fully remote, offer their team benefits like home office set-up, co-working budget, financial wellbeing and career coaching, and much more!

Over the past 7 years OLIO has grown from a local initiative in North London to a global movement. We now have just under 6 million users who have given away over 50 million portions of food, in 63 countries. OLIO-ers have also given away 5 million household items in our non-food section.
