This September, don't wait for January. 

Use the last quarter as your career springboard. 

In my opinion, January is totally overrated because if you wait for the New Year miracle, three months of momentum have vanished. 

In this article, I’m going to cover how you can capture this seasonal shift to start building momentum. 

Autumn, the crispness, feeling focused. I’ve always felt like September is a really exciting time and feel super motivated (it helps that it's my birthday month!) and so if you feel the same, let’s harness that!!

  1. Don’t wait for January: September’s reset energy is fresher, clearer, and way less noisy. Use Q4 as your springboard so you end the year with momentum.
  2. Treat this season as a harvest: reflect on what worked (and didn’t) in 2025 to fuel what’s next.
  3. Focus on three levers for the next 3 months:
  4. Clarity: pick one meaningful step (near-term, not your whole life plan)
  5. Boundaries: drop the patterns and environments you won’t carry into 2026
  6. Energy: create sustainable fuel (not panic/urgency) to make the change stick
  7. Adopt the Springboard Mindset: test, experiment, realign, so you don’t start January in the same stuck cycle.

Summer is over…(I know, how did that happen?!) It was a time for friends, busy plans, holidays, festivals and, ignoring that nagging feeling that something's not quite right with your career… I know, I can see you!

You place those thoughts in a little box at the back of your brain because you're ‘too busy’ with other things, consequently focus on work took a back seat over the summer. But, we work very hard, and to have an opportunity to slow down the work pace, to make space for other areas of our lives, is super important.

However, the reset energy comes in September, now! 

In many countries, including the UK, we are literally programmed from the age of four to view this period of time as a reset when we start school. We feel like something has finished and something else is beginning. 

And, the key thing here is, if you can tap into that energy now, rather than waiting for the sluggish January reset where you're tired, it's dark, the days are shorter, then you are already getting ahead. There's so much pressure around January and needing the ‘perfect’ start to the year, yet in reality, it’s a really hard time to find the motivation to reset. 

I get it, you’re unhappy with where you’re at right now, feeling like you’re being left behind or disappointed that you thought your career would look different by now. Your friends are progressing in a way that you wish you could, yet you feel like you're just stuck in the mud. You’re so ready for a change but it feels like whatever you’ve done this year, up until now, hasn’t worked. But why wait until January to do something about it? 

Starting now builds 3 months of momentum, and you can end the year with agency, finally feeling like you have made progress towards your career goals. 

Q4 is not just about a countdown to Christmas as we're led to believe. I'm sure there's already Christmas cards in the shops, adverts on the television, however I refuse to think about the C word until we’re firmly in December. These months aren’t just a countdown, they are a clarifying zone. 

This is a time where you can reflect on how 2025 has been up until this point. And then you can use that to really get clarity on how you want to end the year and how you want to enter your 2026. 

So, feeling like you're behind at this point doesn't mean that you have to finish the year feeling like that. It can be used as the kickstart you really need to really address this.

Your September Harvest

Consider September as your season to harvest all of your learnings from what you want in your career and prepare the soil for the next cycle and the New Year. Reflecting what has and hasn't worked, and using these insights to fuel what is next:

  1. Clarity: What really matters to you in the next three months, and what's one small step you can take?Focus on the near future rather than planning too far ahead.
  2. Boundaries: What old patterns or behaviours are you no longer willing to carry into the new year? This includes identifying situations and environments that should be left behind.
  3. Energy: The feeling of urgency/stress/panic is only going to carry you so far…the question is How will you create the energy needed for this change? 

And these three months can be transformational in the direction that you want to take your career, but only if you create the container to get you there.

Adopt the Springboard Mindset this Autumn

The springboard mindset is a helpful one to adopt, keeping with the fact that this time is not a sprint to exhaustion and burnout. Remember, September is about intentional moves that can give you the momentum to springboard into 2026.

This is about testing, experimenting, realigning, gaining clarity, getting super clear evidence. 

So that you're not starting January in the same cycle, confused, unclear, feeling stuck, lacking momentum, but instead using this time as a container to springboard yourself into the New Year with clarity, confidence and intentionally taking action towards the career and life that you want to create.

The reassuring thing here is that you don't need to overhaul your whole career in three months. 

It's about just taking one clear step now. Sometimes it can feel overwhelming when you feel like everything has to have happened yesterday.

So to summarise:

  • This period is for testing, experimenting, realigning, and gaining clarity
  • Focus on intentional moves that create momentum
  • Avoid starting January feeling confused, unclear, or lacking momentum
  • But you don't need to overhaul your entire career in three months
  • Taking one clear, structured step now can lay foundations for future success
