Kay Suppamas' Top Tips for Starting a Side Hustle

We chatted with Leafage founder Kay Suppamas to find out her key pieces of advice for those looking to start a side hustle.

Meet Kay Suppamas, the founder of Leafage, which was born from the simplest of desires; to connect people and to inspire and cultivate a love of nature. Kay realised the potential of plant power after the tragic loss of her father in 2016. As her biggest role model and source of inspiration, Kay set out on a path to find meaning and purpose in her life.

Kay joined our Startup Accelerator in 2018 and has since been revolutionising the way in which her city-dwelling peers, who have limited access to their own green space, interact with plant life. Kay shares her three top essential skills for starting and growing a successful side-hustle...

1. Time Management

Plan your day in advance. I write down my daily 5 critical tasks (that will move me closer to my business goal) the night before, so when I’m on my lunch break I know exactly what I need to do - every minute counts! I only work on these 5 tasks to avoid overloading my brain and to maximise my productivity.

2. Building relationships with people

People buy from people. You need to get very good at speaking to strangers. If you focus on your target audience and their experience with your business, it will enable you to market to them more easily and shall open the door to new growth opportunities. My challenge to you is to speak to three new people every day. If you work in an office or co-working space, speak to colleagues or fellow start-ups who you haven’t spoken to before. Get practising!

3. Dig deep

There will be times when you’re tired that you’ll lose your motivation and you want to give it all up! There will also be times that you’ll see less of your friends. Your Friday night means staying in to get the work done. The FOMO can easily take over but if you have a clear ‘why’ to the reason you want to get your business off the ground, you will get through this! Some people use their current pain-points as a driving force, for example:

  • Their current job lacks meaning and purpose
  • The company they’re in does not align with their inner values
  • They aren’t appreciated at work and they know they’re so much better than that
  • They secretly want to prove everyone wrong

Whatever it is for you... find that drive and use it to get through tough days!
