At Kew, we are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment where volunteers from all backgrounds can contribute meaningfully. Our Learning Programme at Wakehurst aims to inspire a passion for plants and the natural world among young people through various educational activities. We welcome over 10,000 pupils annually, ranging from early years to sixth form, and occasionally universities and adult learners. The programme is particularly active from March to July and September to October.

The role involves assisting with the organization of school visits, managing resources for educational programs, setting up workshop materials, and maintaining the inventory of educational resources. Volunteers are expected to help prepare the learning environment, whether in classrooms or outdoor settings, and engage in activities such as propagating seeds and preparing plants for workshops.

We offer a comprehensive induction and ongoing support to our volunteers, ensuring they are well-integrated and have clear roles and responsibilities. Volunteers are treated with respect and are part of a dedicated team, contributing to Kew's mission while gaining knowledge about our living collections. Travel expenses are covered up to a set value.

We seek volunteers who are reliable, punctual, and willing to commit to at least one day a week, excluding holidays. A background in education or events is beneficial, along with the ability to perform physical tasks involved in the role. Volunteers should be comfortable working alone when necessary and demonstrate flexibility and teamwork.

The recruitment process involves individual assessment of applications to match volunteer skills with role requirements. Successful applicants will be invited for an informal recruitment meeting to learn more about the role and meet the team. If there is a mutual fit, induction and necessary training will be provided.
