Position summary:

The Farm and landscape biodiversity manager supports the already defined strategic objectives of the Rainforest Alliance with respect to biodiversity and Regenerative Agriculture for RA’s focus crops and regions. This position will be part of the Global Themes team of the Rainforest Alliance, will report to the Lead Regenerative Agriculture (with a dotted technical reporting line to the Climate lead), [JJ1] and will work in close collaboration with the Market innovations team, Standards and Assurance team and with the regional teams.

We look for a professional with outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, and a strong writing capacity including the ability to write for a diverse set of audiences. Our ideal candidate has a strong team-based orientation but is capable to excel under minimal supervision. His or her excellent interpersonal skills come with the ability to interact culturally, linguistically, and diplomatically with diverse internal and external individuals. Project management is an important part of the job, which means that strong organizational skills and efficient management of multiple tasks and priorities are needed.

Responsibilities: 

  • Provide dynamic and creative support for the fine tuning and implementation of Rainforest Alliance’s strategy on biodiversity and regenerative agriculture;
  • Support the implementation of the Sustainable Agriculture Standard of Rainforest Alliance, related tools, training and guidance documents with regards to the topics of biodiversity and regenerative agriculture;
  • Support the implementation of field programs and projects on regenerative agriculture with farming communities;
  • Provide technical expertise and support to a wide range of projects on biodiversity and regenerative agriculture within the organization, particularly Landscape and Communities and Market Innovations projects.
  • Together with the Lead Regenerative Agriculture, drive regenerative agriculture activities and support consistent application in sector, regional and advocacy strategies across the organization;
  • Assist in building regional technical capacity on the biodiversity and regenerative agriculture theme and support in the development of training and guidance material
  • Support the Lead Regenerative Agriculture and other theme leads with internal and external technical questions related to the following topics: biodiversity, climate change and regenerative agriculture (e.g soil health, IPM, pesticide use, productivity).

Qualifications: 

  • First degree in (ideally tropical) Agronomy or Agroecology and a Master’s degree (or PhD) in agroecology, Soil Science, Natural Resource Management, Conservation Biology, or related studies;
  • Minimum of 4 years hands on (field) experience in agroecology, regenerative agriculture, biodiversity conservation and/or natural resources management, preferably with experience in the Global South;
  • Knowledge of certification programs in the context of sustainable or regenerative agriculture and sustainability practices;
  • Experience in the sustainable production of at least one (ideally two) of Rainforest Alliance focus crops (cocoa, coffee, tea, banana);
  • Experience in design of complex proposals and projects, with bilateral or multilateral donor agencies and company partnerships;
  • Fluency in English, both verbal and written. Additional languages in particular Spanish and/or French are an asset;
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 20% of the time.

Salary:

Commensurate with experience.
