The Role

At Notpla, we are on a mission to make packaging disappear. We are an innovative, ideas- and action-oriented start up that was founded on the belief that nature knows best. We are currently looking to bring in a Packaging Engineer to join our Development & Manufacturing Team, specialising in the development of our proprietary machinery and manufacturing technique.

We are focusing on developing truly sustainable packaging solutions, designed to tackle single-use plastic. Ooho and our other products are made from Notpla, a revolutionary material made from seaweed and plants that biodegrades in weeks, naturally.

At Notpla, we truly believe in what we are trying to achieve and we believe in our employees' ability to help us achieve our goals. Because of this, anybody joining Notpla will be given the opportunity to develop and grow; you won’t be micromanaged as we want you to take responsibility for your domain. This common goal has created a fantastic business culture where everyone takes care. We know that we work better together and this is reflected in our environment and working policies. To go alongside great roles, working in a great working environment, Notpla also offers competitive salaries, the potential for EMI Options, and fantastic benefits including discounts with local businesses and large international retailers. We also offer a flexible working policy that allows you to work to your own flow. We are a social business with multiple clubs and events every week, we are incredibly proud of how our diverse workplace has created a community all pushing together in the pursuit of making packaging disappear.

The manufacturing group within Notpla is responsible for creating our innovative and unique range of products.  In particular, the team is tasked with the in-house production of our flagship Ooho product. They are led by our Director of Development & Manufacturing, who has years of experience leading the development of sustainable packaging alternatives. The team is incredibly dynamic, owning a flexible approach to problem-solving that allows them to flourish with this new and exciting product technology. They are a group that celebrate change and have a constant desire to push the process and capabilities of their products forward. As a Packaging Engineer you will sit within this team. Our engineering function is a versatile, hands-on group that continually strives to improve the engineering philosophy and process whilst reacting to faults and challenges as they arise.

Your profile

The Packaging engineer will initially work on our Notpla Film product, specifically looking at improving the manufacturing process around this. It is imperative that the engineer coming into this role has a practical understanding of packaging technology and has sound hands-on experience with flexible packaging and laminates, ideally from an FMCG background. You will also need to have a working understanding of material - machine interaction and be familiar with the particular challenges of flexible packaging. As well as the above, we are looking for someone who has a passion for sustainability and wants to be a part of the solution.

Other day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Continuous improvement of the current flexible films manufacturing process

  • Working with our existing portfolio of flexible and laminate based packaging materials to improve the material - machine interaction

  • Using your existing knowledge of packing technologies to propose and create engineering solutions for our current and next generations of machines

  • Leading R&D packaging development on the Notpla Film product

  • Running trials on new and existing machines both internally and with external manufacturing partners

  • Representing the engineering team in product meetings

  • Steering and communicating the needs and challenges of the engineering team

  • Taking part in maintenance and reliability checks of the in-house packaging machines

If the above sounds like something you can see yourself doing, then please apply with a CV and cover letter and someone from our recruitment team will be in touch.
