About us:
We’re here to make money work for everyone and we're doing things differently. For too long, banking has been obtuse, complex and opaque.
We want to change that and build a bank with everyone, for everyone. Our amazing community suggests features, test the app and give us constant feedback so we can build something everyone loves.
We're focused on solving problems, rather than selling financial products. We want to make the world a better place and change people's lives through Monzo.
About Risk & Controls
The 1st line Risk & Control Discipline aligns to business areas (“Collectives”) across all of Monzo. Teams across the first line in Monzo seek our guidance on how to ensure we are compliant with regulations and foster a culture of risk-based decisions and careful controls that distinguish us in both banking and technology. Across all of the business areas you support, you will lead the way in real-time risk management by ensuring key risk indicators are well-defined and understood, incidents are managed, MI and reporting packs are created, and risk & control assessments are completed.
We are looking for a SeniorRisk & Controls Manager to partner directly with collectives and squads within Monzo’s Chief Operating Office(COO - mainly Operations, Financial Crime & Supplier Operations; however this requires flexibility as our business landscape grows and evolves). You will be critical in ensuring we embed our operational and conduct risk frameworks, and adhere to key regulatory compliance obligations within these key business areas.
What you’ll be working on:

- Making recommendations to improve control effectiveness and/or identify where new controls are required;
- Managing and reporting risks, controls, issues, incidents and the associated remediating actions;
- Using your risk management knowledge, supporting teams in developing new processes, controls and features by embedding good regulatory and risk practices;
- Embedding awareness of all of the governance related initiatives (issues, incidents & actions) and regulatory or audit deadlines;
- Leading risk assessments (RCSA) in the 1st line to then identify and monitor completion of risk-mitigating actions to address the root causes;
- Complying with our policies and help define them where necessary;
- Acting as a key stakeholder managing & fostering positive relationships across the three lines of defence on any deficiencies or control gaps across Monzo as needed and
- Innovating and finding new ways to build effective governance and risk management processes;
This role may also involve line managing a small team of Risk and Control Managers and / or Analysts.
You should apply if:
- You have worked in a UK banking, professional services or fintech industry firm with experience in risk, controls or compliance related roles;
- You have experience working in any of the following areas - Customer Operations, Financial Crime, Third Party Risk Management, HR;
- You have experience in Risk & Control Assessments, Audit Management, Incident Management and Issue & Action Management;
- Are resilient and comfortable working in a fast paced environment where the day to day job is constantly evolving and changing;
- Are hands-on and great at delivery & execution;
- Are curious and collaborative - you’re great at asking incisive questions to pick things up and act on them quickly;
- Have a good understanding of industry risk standards and practices;
- Have experience managing multiple deadlines through to completion and have excellent attention to detail and
- Are excited about helping Monzo scale in a compliant, thoughtful and controlled way;
It would be a plus if you have:
