Introduction to the role
This cartographic role takes full responsibility for updating the nationwide A-Z street maps within the cartographic team of Collins.
You will be using ArcGIS, Oracle, and a variety of associated tools to maintain the prestigious A-Z maps and atlases. As well as being widely used by the general public these maps are a trusted source of mapping for government and public sector bodies. This crucial role in the team ensures the mapping is as up to date as possible so that they remain a trusted source of information.
Part of a team of nine in-house geographers, GIS experts, and cartographers; you will used your technical skills, eye for detail, and passion for geography to create and maintain accurate digital geographic content at street level.
Working with others, you will use your knowledge and experience to ensure that appropriate tools and processes are in place to allow the team to effectively manage all types of geographic and cartographic content and that this content is efficiently productised in both print and digital formats.
Key tasks and accountabilities
Manage the update process of A-Z street atlases and maps.
Identify and research geographical change in Britain that had an impact on A-Z Maps.
Review communications from councils and other government bodies to identify relevant changes.
Compile detailed editorial instructions for cartographers to carry out the relevant updates to the mapping.
Maintain indexes so they were in line with the up-to-dated mapping.
Experience required
Confident user of GIS software, especially ArcGIS [ArcMap and/or ArcGIS Pro] and QGIS.
Experience working with a variety of geographic and cartographic data sets from different sources, including vector, raster, and textual data.
Experience using relational database management systems to manage geospatial data
Experience of the practical application of technical geospatial solutions in a cartographic environment.
Show evidence of being able to make decision and take responsibility for managing and updating map databases.
Skills required
GIS and database technology [particularly ESRI, QGIS and Oracle tools] and have an appreciation of what makes a ‘good map’.
Strong team player used to delivering results through effective team working.
Keen interest in global geography and a passion for creating authoritative digital geographic content that accurately reflects the world we live in today.
A logical thinker with ability to work calmly and effectively under pressure.
Good decision making and project management skills.
