GoHenry pioneered the youth fintech category with a mission to make every kid good with money. Our award-winning product helps over 2 million parents and kids gain confidence with money, with a debit card and money management app for kids aged 6-18.

The role

The Legal and Compliance Team provides valuable support across GoHenry, as part of the Acorns Group. We help with internal legal matters such as contract review and management, advise on marketing and product releases, and assess how new laws and regulations impact us. We act as strategic partners in assessing legal risk, and provide valuable check and challenge at all levels across the business.

This role will lead the UK and Europe Legal Team, be the focal point for all legal matters, and will play a key role working alongside and advising senior management in the business as we continue our expansion from the UK into Europe and beyond.

The role will report directly to our Chief Executive Officer, and working closely with Acorns Legal; and will have a large degree of autonomy in day-to-day UK and Europe legal matters.

There will also be team management responsibilities for a Senior Paralegal, and a Trainee Solicitor who is close to completing the SQE and qualifying as Legal Counsel into the team in late 2023/early 2024.

About you

We are looking for a UK-qualified lawyer (6+ PQE) who is used to working in a corporate and commercial environment, particularly within regulated financial services.

You will be highly organised and comfortable working in a fast-paced organisation with constant change, and be used to assessing legal risk quickly and confidently. You will be used to working across teams in a global organisation, supervising and developing others, as well as rolling your sleeves up and getting involved.

We welcome candidates who have worked in private practice and in-house, though for those considering a move from private practice we would expect you to have some in-house experience (most likely through a client secondment).

In 2022 GoHenry acquired French fintech, Pixpay, and so this role will also have a European legal focus, working with external counsel in relevant European jurisdictions on a range of legal and regulatory matters. In addition in 2023 GoHenry was acquired by Acorns Grow.

Main areas of responsibility

  • Commercial legal work, including negotiating a wide range of commercial contracts.
  • Advising on regulatory matters around Payments, Electronic money, and Investments legal and regulatory work in the UK and Europe. Leading on the acquisition of any regulatory licences.
  • Being the point of contact for internal legal questions including working directly with the Executive Team.
  • Managing the Legal Team to ensure effective delivery and appropriate training and development
  • Managing and developing productive relationships with external counsel to manage GoHenry’s UK and international business needs and relationships cost-effectively and efficiently.
  • Managing the legal team’s budget to ensure cost effective and appropriate delivery of the legal function.
  • Assisting with key projects for the wider Acorns Group, including internal restructurings, debt and equity financings, mergers and acquisitions, strategic investments, and other strategic projects.
  • Helping increase business knowledge of key legislation through training and development.
  • Supporting the career development of legal team members, in addition to our Head of Business Risk & Compliance, working as part of a close-knit Legal and Business Risk Compliance Team.

If you do not meet the criteria above though think you’d be great for this role, then please do apply as we’d love to hear from you!
