Job Overview
Our Legal and Compliance team is responsible for managing all legal and regulatory matters, including contracts, corporate governance, general compliance, academic compliance, employment law matters, intellectual property, product counseling, government relations, and claims. The team includes dedicated teams that support every aspect of Coursera's platform, including university, enterprise and industry partnerships.
As part of Coursera’s Legal and Compliance team, you will play a key role in increasing global access to a world-class education. The Senior Counsel is responsible for negotiating agreements with university partners, including agreements related to degree programs. The Senior Counsel will support a majority of Coursera’s US-based university partners and will also be provided with opportunities to assist with international transactions. The role requires the Senior Counsel to identify and advise on business and legal issues of proposed transactions, and to respond in a timely, thoughtful manner to partner and internal stakeholder inquiries. The Senior Counsel is expected to be widely respected by the Legal and Compliance team and throughout the company due to their analytical thinking, savvy risk management, communication skills, and ability to get things done. We expect the Senior Counsel to form strong working relationships with internal clients and Coursera’s partners, earn the respect of the teams, and lead through productivity and influence.

This role will engage with all levels of employees and management, so interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) are vital to strong working relationships.
Responsibilities
- Draft and negotiate a variety of agreements for courses, degrees and other credentials
- Advise on risks and liabilities of proposed transactions and devise creative and practical legal solutions to meet business objectives
- Recognize and communicate themes and opportunities surfaced through partner interactions and lead cross-functional teams in resolving issues and challenges
- Support the Legal and Compliance team’s efforts in the preparation, implementation and refinement of forms, processes and procedures
- Obtain and maintain a strong knowledge of the industry and the company, its mission, strategy and values, product and service offerings, and objectives of supported business units
- Keep abreast of applicable laws, regulations and industry guidance that impact Coursera’s agreements and business practices
Basic Qualifications
- 8+ years of relevant legal practice experience
- Must be currently admitted to practice as an attorney, and be in active status and good standing with at least one state bar
- Demonstrated experience in contract negotiation, including experience in complex commercial transactions
- Demonstrated experience in counseling internal clients in complex commercial transactions
- Experience managing shifting priorities within a fast-paced, rapidly evolving environment
- Prior success collaborating cross-functionally
Preferred Qualifications
- In-house counsel experience
- Higher education practice experience
- Ability to assist and guide internal/external clients through the federal and state regulatory environment
- Knowledge of FERPA, GDPR, accreditation, state authorization, Title IV, and accessibility compliance
- Ability to identify and resolve issues relating to privacy, data-sharing, and student privacy

Compensation:
Our job titles may span more than one career level. The starting base pay for this role is between 166,000 and 227,000. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs, and location. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, and benefits.
