Job Summary:
This is a cover role during the sabbatical leave of the Europe Communications Manager. The role of the Senior Communications Specialist is to develop and execute media strategies for 350’s campaigns in Europe in tandem with the respective regional digital staff, making sure this strategy is aligned with our global communications objectives and captures relevant global media moments. The role of the Senior Communications Specialist also includes crafting our narrative and messaging specific to the region, proactively seeking new opportunities to communicate our core messages, handling media requests and cultivating media relationships, and speaking on behalf of the organization in relevant forums and networks. This is a fast-paced job which often requires juggling multiple tasks simultaneously and tackling several issues in parallel.
Key outputs include:
- Ensure smooth flow of information between global communications and regional team, with a view to: identifying opportunities for amplification of regional content globally; amplifying cross-regional and global moments regionally; adapting global messaging and products to regional context
- Input into regional campaign and program/project strategies from a communications angle
- Media analysis for key regional campaigns and priority moments
- Outline of quarterly and yearly work plan for regional communications work and how it connects to departmental goals and success indicators
- Maintaining and ensuring flow of information and alignment between program and communications strategies both regionally and nationally
- Managing media relations
- Day-to-day implementation of regional media work
- Regional press releases, statements, regionally-specific talking points and other regional media outputs
- Regional media strategies, in consultation with line manager and regional director/team lead, and in alignment with global communications goals
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Media strategies: develop and implement strategic regional media plans for specific campaigns and regional events
- Develops in consultation with regional program staff and wider communications team a comprehensive regional communications strategy to support 350.org’s relevant regional campaigns, making sure it is aligned with our global communications objectives
- Media engagement: monitor media, identify digital and media opportunities and engage with issues relevant for 350.org’s work and broader context
- Media materials: develop regionally relevant traditional media materials, such as press releases, op-eds, and media packages, and advise on the development of regional multimedia and social media materials when appropriate
- Craft regionally-relevant messaging and provide guidance on messaging and framing for Europe campaigns
- Media support and facilitation: support and encourage the media work of the 350 country teams in Europe.
- Media relations: identify relevant media contacts, cultivate relationships with regional journalists, and further develop and maintain media contacts lists
- Manages and implements day-to-day media work as part of implementing regional media strategy (handling press requests, building relationships with journalists, pitching stories, drafting statements, etc.
- Internal collaboration: collaborate departmentally and interdepartmentally to develop alignment between 350.org’s global, regional, and cross-regional communications
- Coordinates with global and other regional teams on cross-cutting projects
- Actively participates in communications community of practice
Required Qualifications:
- At least three (3) years of experience in communications, advocacy campaigns, and professionally practicing some of the following competencies
- Strong skills writing press releases and ability to communicate complex stories in ways that are engaging and easy to understand;
- Knowledge of campaigning work and an ability to exercise independent/good judgement on campaign strategy and campaign management
- Familiarity with the European media landscape
- A resilient and flexible team player who can handle a fast paced, high pressure, highly collaborative team culture with competing priorities
- An excellent communicator with first class writing and collaboration skills in English and respective regional languages
- Strong aptitude for communication, facilitation to help guide, inspire, consult and coordinate with remote and diverse teams from different regions
- Understanding of the regional media landscape, willingness to do research and become knowledgeable on publications and outlets for environmental and climate change news
- Working knowledge of the current regional and global debates on climate change and climate justice, and strong interest in working on these issues
- Familiarity with climate and environmental issues
Ability to integrate diversity, equity and inclusion in day-to-day work
- Strong interpersonal skills and experience working collaboratively across cultures and time zones, via video conference calls and other online tools
Preferred Qualifications:
- Minimum 3 years of experience doing communications for a nongovernmental organization, non-profit or campaign
- Network of existing contacts and ability to strengthen campaigning relationships with organisations and researchers advocating for climate solutions/ just transition to renewable energy, preferably around the world
- Experience collaborating with diverse constituencies (labour, displaced communities)
- Relationships with key editors and journalists from international outlets
- Experience building local to national or national to international campaign strategies
- A track record of using non-traditional and traditional media together to achieve communications objectives around grassroot campaigns
- Experience in audience engagement through digital channels
- Understanding of 350.org’s campaigns and theory of social change
- Experience developing and running communications trainings for groups of staff, local groups and volunteers
- Experience and competency working in multicultural groups
- Experience working and living in multiple countries
- Multilingual
- Able to travel internationally on occasion
- Proficiency in Meltwater, Salesforce, Airtable, Falcon, Google Suite, Slack, and Zoom or similar systems
Work Environment: This role is a remote working opportunity in a fast paced, high pressure, highly collaborative team culture. Attendance at global climate summits, forums, or actions will occasionally be requested, based on geographic location or work capacity needs.
