Role Summary

Role Requirements

  • Proven experience as an Electronics Engineering Team Lead or similar senior role.
  • Track record in developing mass-produced consumer electronics, preferably in a regulated industry.
  • Skilled in project planning, organization, and delivery of complex consumer products.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of electronic theory and current technological developments.
  • Proficiency in schematic drawing, PCB layout, and firmware writing for embedded systems.
  • Experience with hardware and firmware management, including version control and documentation.

About the role: 

As a Electronics and Embedded Software Engineer lead you will be driving the whole electronics development within Elvie. Working on current and upcoming projects, the outcome of your and your team work will directly impact women’s lives. You will be reporting to the technology director and working closely with various crafts such as design and software engineers, data scientists as well as product and project managers.

Location: Hybrid working; a mix of working from our Bristol office & working remotely, some travel may be required to the London Office

Requirements

What you’ll be doing at Elvie:

  • You will lead the planning and execution of the electronics development of Elvie products. You and your team will work on products themselves, as well as the support equipment required to aid the development and manufacture of those products.
  • You will ensure engineering excellence and best practices within your team. You will investigate, propose and initiate the use of new tools and processes to improve accuracy, consistency and speed allowing the team to do their jobs efficiently.
  • You will manage a team of in house electronics and embedded software engineers and possibly a network of freelancers and consultants working across multiple projects concurrently.
  • You will support your team through their career development. You will help to keep them excited, engaged and motivated and will conduct performance reviews.
  • You will write and maintain controlled documentation (requirements, specifications, test methods and reports), constantly looking for ways to make this process more efficient. Currently, both Elvie products are considered medical devices in some markets. A good appreciation of the implications of this to your design process would be a distinct advantage.
  • You will identify opportunities to improve current products quality and reduce cost while protecting usability and product experience.
  • You will help to identify new technologies and develop demonstrators to illustrate the usage of these technologies for new products.

What we are looking for:

  • You have previously held an Electronics Engineering Team Lead or similarly senior position.
  • You have the ability and desire to lead a team of electronics and embedded software engineers, while being a hands-on and active part of that team, at the same time. 
  • You actively seek ways to maximise your own and your team's output and potential.
  • You have a demonstrable track record (via portfolio) of involvement in the development of mass produced consumer electronics (Experience working within the Medical Device industry, or a highly regulated environment an advantage).
  • You have experience in scoping, planning and estimating development of complex consumer products, 
  • You have experience of managing, delivering and maintaining complex consumer products, with an in-market life of up to 10 years.
  • You are able to anticipate issues during electronics development activities and take considered actions to avoid them. You have a proven track record for planning and organising your projects and delivering them on time and to spec.
  • You push for quality and best practice, whilst maintaining an agile and creative approach to problem solving and delivery. 
  • You have a proven track record in making improvements within your department, bringing about positive changes to the team and business.
  • You have an in-depth understanding of electronic theory and a passion for technology and keep abreast of the latest developments across multiple themes and topics.
  • You’re a crystal clear communicator, able to keep discussions succinct and on topic.
  • You are able to distil an Electronic product brief into a number of well defined project stages, formulate design requirements and manage their traceability. 
  • You have experience in drawing of schematics and drafting PCB layouts with an appreciation for EMC, Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Design for Cost (DFC) when appropriate using a PCB design package (preferably Altium 365)
  • You can compile fabrication packs of your designs for PCB manufacturers and source components to create costed bill of materials, if needed.
  • You are comfortable with repositories and versioning of hardware and firmware files as well as managing controlled documents (test methods, test reports, specs, BOM’s)
  • If required, you are comfortable writing firmware for embedded systems. In particular for connected devices using BLE, including  unit and integration testing.
  • You have a demonstrable ability to develop, review and critique firmware written in C/C++ based around the Zephyr RTOS.  You may also be familiar with other similar  languages, tools and toolchains. This will also include fault finding and debugging hardware and firmware using various techniques and equipment including logic analysers, oscilloscopes, and debug probes
  • Ability to assemble electronic prototypes using your skills in soldering, rework and SMT hand place and reflow, if needed.
