Overview:

CoolStays is a fast-growing online travel company on an exciting journey. It’s our mission to curate the definitive list of amazing places to stay in the UK and abroad.

We are a small tech-driven company and our focus is on creating excellence with our systems. As well as our front-end website and mobile apps, we have a comprehensive admin area and a client area for our owners. We also have a growing set of data tools that we use to improve how these different parties get the best out of our site and understand their part in the industry.

We’re looking for a Web Developer to join our team, and help propel Coolstays to the next level.

Job Summary and Responsibilities:

Working as part of the Coolstays development team, and reporting to our Technical Director, you’ll be assisting in development of the front end website, mobile apps and our back end applications.

Your role will be wide-ranging role including:

  • Development of our back end systems and CMS
  • Development of the front end website
  • Development of our mobile apps
  • Working with applications and debugging
  • Producing clean, readable and maintainable code
  • Working on new and existing projects relating to design, development and maintenance
  • Liaising with the wider team and our owners and customers for support issues

This is an exciting opportunity to get involved with a leading travel platform as we grow rapidly. You’ll be working directly on our production platforms and helping shape our business trajectory. This role would suit either an experienced developer who has a good grounding or an ambitious graduate who is tech savvy and has a lot of drive.

Who you are:

We are looking for someone who sees solutions through code in everything and everywhere. You’ll probably actually have coding in your blood - most likely having messed around with ideas, websites and scripts since you were young.

You will have experience in a wide variety of packages, applications and languages and be able to demonstrate how you’ve deployed things - big or small - either in a professional or personal environment. You will probably have a qualification in coding, computing, development or an associated discipline. It may be to a degree level but not necessarily. You will have experience with both front end and back end development and an innate understanding of good UX.

As an employee of a fast moving travel company, the ideal candidate will love to travel. You may have worked in the travel industry and if you have will hopefully understand how things are moving for modern travellers.

You will additionally:

  • Be a confident and positive team player
  • Be staying on top of trends and best-practice in web and application development
  • Be able to understand how the work you are delivering fits in to the wider business
  • Be able to work well under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • Be able to handle multiple projects at once
  • Be happy working with legacy code as well as leading edge initiatives
  • Be a great verbal and written communicator
  • Be able to self start and manage your work in a remote environment
  • Be willing and able to travel for regular meetings with our team that may require time outside of working hours.

Skills and Experience:

Our stack is wide and varied.


The following skills and experience are essential:

  • Experience with Git or similar version control systems
  • Front-End development frameworks encompassing HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React and React Native
  • Object-orientated PHP development
  • MVC architectural patterns
  • Responsive user interfaces for multiple device specifications
  • Clean coding and documenting style
  • Working with and setting up MySQL Databases and an understanding of their strengths/weaknesses
  • Integrating with third-party and internal REST APIs
  • AWS - EC2, S3, RDS and other cloud technologies

We will be looking for demonstrable examples of all these criteria.

Desirable experience:

While not essential - the perfect candidate will have experience in the following:

  • Laravel
  • Expo
  • Leaflet.js
  • Stripe integrations
  • Bootstrap CSS framework
  • Figma

Specifics:

Hours: This is a full time role with core hours of 9am - 5pm, Mon-Fri.

Location: This is a ‘hybrid’ working role, combining home-working with regular work days at our coworking space in Reading.

You also have the option to work regularly at a coworking venue near you, if required.

You will be expected to attend regular development and team meetings in London, Brighton and Manchester. Travel costs will be covered by the company.
