What will you be doing?
Sheffield Jazz is a charitable company with annual turnover of around £60k. We’re a local music promoter, and we aim to bring the best of national and international jazz to the city, providing opportunities for people from all backgrounds in the Sheffield City Region and throughout Yorkshire, to hear and learn from some of the greatest of current artists. We’re well established as part of the local music community, and are currently celebrating our 50th year in existence. Our two main areas of activity are:
arranging 20-25 concerts pa running a regular workshop for aspiring jazz musicians
Like many small charities, Sheffield Jazz is entirely run by volunteers, we have no paid staff. Our Trustees, together with other willing helpers, organise all our activities. We now need a new Treasurer to take care of the day to day bookkeeping and help us with the general financial management. The current main functions of the Treasurer are:
accounting for concerts, and paying the bands, sound engineer and others compiling monthly reports for the Trustees preparing the books for our independent examiner
Most of the work is digital and can be done remotely. The current time commitment is about 1 hour pw after each concert and 3-4 hours monthly preparing reports. However, we believe some of this work could be simplified by someone with the right skills and knowledge. The amount of “hands on” work can be very flexible depending on how involved the role holder would like to be. The Treasurer would be asked to attend some of our 9-10 committee meetings pa (c 2 hours each, on evenings) to keep the Trustees informed on our financial position.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for someone with an interest in jazz and who can bring to the role solid experience in bookkeeping or accountancy. They need to be a good teamworker, flexible and reliable.
What difference will you make?
This is a key role in Sheffield Jazz where you will have the opportunity to shape our strategy and play an important part in delivering it, working closely with great musicians from across the UK and beyond.
