What will you be doing?

MathsMakers is a vibrant education charity that partners with schools in London to deliver maths intervention programmes. Since 2014, we have developed a successful track record in helping children aged 10-16 years gain confidence in their maths learning and improve their attainment.  We work mostly with disadvantaged students including those with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) and EAL (English as an Additional Language). Our objective is to narrow the attainment gap for these students compared to their peers, and help all to achieve their potential. We would love to hear from you if you share our vision. We are looking for committed and motivated individuals with a background in education or the third sector. We are seeking to diversify our Board and would particularly welcome expressions of interest from those with experience in working with disadvantaged communities. We would also love to hear from you if you can help with fundraising and developing our MathsMakers public profile. In 2024, MathsMakers will celebrate 10 years of working with schools to help children reach their potential in maths. We are proud of our achievements to date and ambitious in our aims to develop further in the years ahead. The role of the Trustee is voluntary and we ask all our Trustees to contribute actively to the Board, using their skills and experience to give strategic direction, evaluate performance, and ensure the organisation is run efficiently and effectively. We are a friendly, inclusive and dedicated team. Trustees are asked to make the following commitments:

Attend up to seven Board meetings per year. Most meetings are online. We meet in person once a year, usually in November. Contribute advice and support on an ad hoc basis, Attend events and promote the work of the charity, View online recordings, or visit in person, some MathsMakers sessions. All travel and out-of-pocket expenses will be paid.

MathsMakers is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff, volunteers and trustees to share this commitment. Applicants will be subject to a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.

What difference will you make?

By becoming a Trustee of MathsMakers you will play an important role in improving and enhancing the attainment of the children we support and helping them to reach their potential. Below is a sample of the feedback we have received from schools, students and parents. “We have used MathsMakers for many years now and find their commitment to our students and their progress commendable. Students come away from sessions feeling more confident and motivated and really appreciate the time, attention and support provided. Students make good progress. For example, in 2022/23, test scores showed that Year 11 MathsMakers students made greater progress compared to the average for the whole year group.” - Head of Maths, Nower Hill High School, 2023 "I found MathsMakers to be the best among many outside organisations I have had experience with that offer mathematics intervention in schools.  Thanking MathsMakers for the care and professionalism they bring to their programme.” - Head of Maths, Park High School, 2020 “MathsMakers has helped me work more independently. I feel more confident and comfortable asking questions, not only in the maths class but also in other classes”. - Year 11 Student “MathsMakers gave my daughter a real boost. She gained more knowledge. The tutor was so lovely. She taught well and explained clearly. Thanks a lot.” - Parent “It was a really good experience. It helped me to take more initiative - when students were not keen, I needed to find ways of encouraging them. It helped me develop my communication skills and my ability to motivate others.” - MathsMakers Mentor
