What will you be doing?
Star Bereavement Support Services is a well-established charity within Wakefield District and is recognised for the valuable work it delivers for Children and Young People dealing with loss. As an ambitious and forward thinking organisation with clear aims and objectives, we’re seeking a Treasurer with experience to assist us with our Financial Affairs. About the Role As Treasurer you will assist the board to oversee the financial affairs of Star, including risk and strategy, ensuring the charity is effective, fit for purpose and within accepted accounting practice. As Treasurer will work with the Auditors to produce the annual report and accounts and with the Service Manager and Accountant to support the delivery and reporting of day-to-day financial operations at the Board Meeting. You will oversee budgets, help develop internal management accounts and annual financial statements to the Board of Trustees. Be monitoring and advising on the financial viability of the charity and advising on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plan About You You’re likely to be able to demonstrate experience of, or aptitude for much of the following:
Experience of financial management and accounting. An understanding of strategy and an ability to contribute actively in giving strategic financial direction to Star, setting overall policy, defining goals and budgeting accordingly, to ensure long term financial sustainability. Hold a professional accounting, finance or similar qualification Knowledge and understanding of financial planning, cash flow and budgeting and best practice in this area. Strong understanding of financial management and reporting Explaining financial matters to those with less experience or understanding Identifying and translating financial risks and opportunities, to enable the board to make informed decisions. Ideally with an understanding of the charity sector and the different types of funding, fund raising and income streams. A desire to learn about and understand the Charities Act 2022 from a financial perspective.

What are we looking for?
You will be a strong communicator, with the ability to share financial information with others, influence to make change and work effectively with the board, Service Manager and Accounts Provider, to run the Finance Group and chair the finance meetings. You will be able to present the following to the Board for discussion and approval:
Quarterly financial updates Annual accounts (Report and Financial Statements) Budgets Strategic Plan financial forecasts One-off financial reports requested by the Organisation
With the ability to appropriately advise the Service Manager and Senior Management Team on financial controls and ensuring that appropriate financial controls are implemented and appropriate financial records are kept by the Accountant and Operations Manager. We would also welcome experience in the areas, of social enterprise, income generation and fund raising.

Ensuring the board is informed and fully understands the financial implications of its decisions Providing, support, assistance and guidance to assist Star to become sustainable and move away from being reliant on funding Ensuring that Star operates within the financial guidelines set out in current legislation, by the Charity Commission, the charity’s constitution and by the Board Advising the Board on financial performance and policies and ensure measurement against targets and application of financial policies; On behalf of the Board ensuring that it's financial obligations are met By regularly reviewing and advising the Board on the introduction of appropriate and adequate financial controls; By advising the Board on the financial implications and financial operational risks arising from any strategic and policy decisions. By providing expertise to the board and operational team on financial matters To enable the organisation to continue to deliver its valuable work
