Volunteer Become a member of the Board at The Ecology Centre

What will you be doing?

We are looking for individuals with relevant skills to join an engaged Board of Trustees to help the charity achieve its mission. Above all, we are looking for individuals with passion for driving the strategic direction and commercial success of a small community charity that aims to strengthen connections between people and the environment while engaging and empowering people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. This is a voluntary role and, though we ask that Board members are able to devote approximately 5-8 hours a month to the charity’s work, we work in a respectful environment that is scalable to your individual circumstances.

What are we looking for?

We are looking to have a diverse set of skills and backgrounds within our Board of Trustees in order to ensure an appropriate blend of entrepreneurship, innovation, and governance/oversight to safeguard the smooth running of a flourishing environmental charity. Previous experience in environmental and/or third sector roles is welcome but not necessary and nor do we consider it a requirement that you have previous experience as part of a Board or Executive Committee. We are particularly interested in hearing from individuals with experience of any of the following:

Treasury/Financial Accounting Employment Law Human Resources Strategic development Leading turnarounds and/or growth of third sector or corporate organisations Fundraising

However, we’re interested in hearing from all individuals with integrity and team-working ethic with relevant transferable skills or experience (professional or otherwise) you believe you can bring to the table and who have a passion for being a leader.

The Ecology Centre’s mission is to provide direct experience of the environment to help people improve their quality of life. We aim to provide a welcoming, safe and green space for communities to connect with each other and nature. We foster connections between people and the environment by anticipating and responding to need with acceptance, compassion and kindness, and providing opportunities for learning, experience, and participation to bring greater understanding and engagement that supports community and individual empowerment.The Board of Trustees of The Ecology Centre oversee, direct and support all of its activities. As a member of the committee, you will be part of a small team of passionate individuals responsible for the strategic direction and oversight towards achievement of its goals. You’ll work together with the Board of Trustees, staff and volunteers to ensure that the charity continues to have a positive impact on its local environment, people and society as a whole. You will help set the direction of the organisation, lead strategic and business planning, get involved with projects and get to know the people involved with the Centre and community. The Board of Trustees meet on the first Thursday of each month (or more frequently as appropriate) and, in between, are asked to progress agreed actions or react to circumstances as they arise to ensure the charity achieves its objectives under a solid leadership footing.
