Volunteer Events Co-ordination - heritage events

What will you be doing?

The Events Manager head up a team of event volunteers to organise and manage events. They will link up with the Comms and Marketing Team Leader to support the full communications function.  The responsibilities of the role include: 

Planning, organising and running FHALMA’s events, both virtual and face-to-face.   

Leading the delivery of the annual Huntley conference, normally held in February. You will be working with the chair, CEO and other volunteers to deliver this event. 

Regularly attending meetings (held online) to update on progress and to take part in discussions on FHALMA’s activities.

   We estimate that this role will require, on average, 1-2 hours per week maximum - but with a peak of hours in the two weeks leading up to the annual conference.  

What are we looking for?

We are looking for someone who wants to deliver events that will be engaging, informative and that will bring people together. They will bring energy and ideas to this new role and be able to work independently and collaboratively to ensure goals are met.

Background in events producing Interest in/ co-curation/programming Black heritage Ability to work with challenging materials (some historic documents may contain incidents of racism) You will have a strong understanding of technology/IT Excellent communication skills Be willing to muck in and help out where necessary Build and maintain strong networks with internal and external stakeholders Have excellent verbal, written and social skills

We are open to expressions of interest from people from all backgrounds, with relevant skills and interests at any career stage, including people who have retired or are otherwise not currently in employment. You may have experience in the events industry and be interested in applying those skills to a voluntary role in a charity. You may, for example, be an archivist, heritage professional or a researcher. We are open to this role being shared and being part of a wider team. 

What difference will you make?

Jessica and Eric Huntley, Guyanese-born pioneering radical Black publishers, helped shape today’s Black British culture.For more than a half-century the Huntleys led and participated in many grassroots struggles for racial and social justice.  We have exciting advocacy plans for the charity in 2024/26 and need an increased level of support to raise our profile and outreach for our events. Your input will shape how we present ourselves to our stakeholders, funders and the general public. With your help we will be able to continue to build back our creative capacity - reduced since the pandemic:. Our events manager (with a small team of volunteer producers) will be able to co-curate, and develop events that share the following: that the Huntleys: associated with the Black Parents’ Movement, campaigning against the controversial ‘sus’ (stop and search) laws, the supplementary school movement, the New Cross massacre action committee, the Keskidee Centre, Britain’s first African-Caribbean cultural centre, and the International Book Fair of Radical Black and Third World Books. Both Jessica and Eric Huntley, though not yet ‘artists’, were heavily involved with the Caribbean Artists Movement; a seminal cultural initiative centred in London, focused on work being produced by Caribbean writers, visual artists, poets, dramatists, filmmakers, actors and musicians. The Huntley’s Bookshop was a destination for artists to thrive: a platform for storytelling and publishing new talent, for example, Linton Kwesi Johnson’s Dread, Beat and Blood and Rodney’s How Europe Underdeveloped Africa.
