This esteemed institution is now seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Project Curator to bring its cuneiform tablet collections to the public eye.

Role Summary:

  • Create digital representations of cuneiform tablets.
  • Enhance the documentation of the cuneiform tablet collections.
  • Integrate unregistered tablet fragments into the Collections Management System.
  • Manage the Middle East study room.
  • Promote the cuneiform collections through various media.

Role Requirements:

  • MA/MSc in cuneiform studies, archaeology, digital humanities, or a related field.
  • Experience with imaging archaeological artifacts.
  • Proficient IT skills and experience handling archaeological materials.
  • Strong communication skills in English and teamwork abilities.

The organisation - The British Museum Founded in 1753, the British Museum’s remarkable collection spans over two million years of human history and culture. The Museum is one of the leading visitor attractions and its world-famous collection includes the Rosetta Stone, the Parthenon sculptures, Egyptian mummies, the Admonitions Scroll, and the Amaravati sculptures.

The role - Project Curator Cuneiform collections This is a full-time, fixed-term role for 3 years. The main responsibility is to make publicly accessible the cuneiform tablet collections in support of the Museum Operating Plan and all relevant Museum strategies. This includes creating digital images of cuneiform tablets, contributing to upgrading the documentation of the cuneiform tablet collections, assisting with the registration of historically unregistered tablet fragments into the Museum’s Collections Management System, and supervising the Middle East study room. You will also assist in making the cuneiform tablet collections, and knowledge about it, publicly accessible via publication, digital, display, and broadcast.

Job requirements The ideal candidate should have an MA/MSc (or equivalent) in cuneiform studies, archaeology, digital humanities, or related disciplines. Experience of imaging archaeological objects, excellent IT skills, and experience of working with archaeological material are required. You should be an open, effective communicator with good spoken and written English and have the ability to work as part of a team.
