Role Summary

  • Develop and maintain system architecture for TED’s media production and distribution.
  • Ensure high-quality performance and code standards across the board.

Role Requirements

  • Minimum of 8 years professional software development experience.
  • At least 6 years of Ruby on Rails production experience.
  • Strong skills in file system architecture, networking, and Linux/Unix administration.
  • Proficient with NodeJS, video encoding tools (FFmpeg, HLS), and web technologies.
  • Experience with database design, caching, CDNs, Docker, and AWS deployment.
  • Commitment to project completion with a balance between perfection and speed.
  • Experience refactoring legacy projects and working on greenfield development.
  • Effective in high-pressure troubleshooting scenarios and values diverse collaboration.

POSITION OVERVIEW TED creates, produces and distributes audio and video media (most famously TED Talks) to millions of people around the world. As a Senior Software Architect on TED's Technology team, you will have the opportunity to have your work showcased on one of the largest stages in digital media. Working with best-in-class, leading edge technologies you will lead the architecture and development on the tools that drive TED’s media production pipeline to engineer the workflow which takes media from the cameras at TED’s conferences all the way to the final media products that are delivered to the public.

RESPONSIBILITIES Create, maintain and evolve system architecture in support of TED’s media production and distribution for both audio and video media. Manage and monitor testing, performance, and code quality. Influence and guide the direction of our products and technology choices. Foster growth and support other engineers through constructive, collaborative code reviews. Identify and communicate technical constraints and opportunities with stakeholders. Other duties and special projects as may be assigned from time to time. Periodically travel to support media operations at TED conference events on-site.

QUALIFICATIONS 8+ years of overall professional software development experience. 6+ years of production Ruby on Rails experience. Strong familiarity with file system architecture, networking and Linux / Unix administration. Strong familiarity and experience with NodeJS. Demonstrable knowledge of video encoding tools and delivery like FFmpeg and HLS. Able to optimize performance through the use of proper database design, caching, and CDNs. Real-world experience in using Docker and AWS infrastructure to deploy applications. Curious and knowledgeable about web technologies and frameworks. Strong ownership of work with the ability to drive projects from inception through completion, balancing doing it right and doing it fast. Able to refactor legacy projects in addition to greenfield development. Level-headed during time-sensitive troubleshooting. Value cross-functional collaboration and a diverse workplace.
