Role Summary:

  • Manage all aspects of the Ancient Mesopotamian collection at the British Museum.
  • Assist the Permanent Curator to deliver exceptional projects related to Mesopotamia.
  • Conduct research and enhance public access to the Mesopotamian collections.
  • Engage with the public and provide education on the significance of the collection.
  • Contribute to the preservation and understanding of Mesopotamian history spanning 4000 years.

Role Requirements:

  • MA / MSc in Ancient Near Eastern history and archaeology.
  • Experience with temporary exhibitions or gallery refurbishments.
  • Supervisory or directorial experience in research or fieldwork projects.
  • Public engagement experience within the relevant field.
  • Experience working in a Museum, University, or similar environment promoting Mesopotamia.
  • Management experience with people, teams, projects, and budgets.

The British Museum is seeking a Curator for Ancient Mesopotamia. This is a full-time, fixed-term position until 31 March 2026, based in Bloomsbury, London.

The role: As the Curator for Ancient Mesopotamia, you will be responsible for all aspects of Ancient Mesopotamia at the Museum and assist the Permanent Curator for Ancient Mesopotamia in delivering outstanding projects relating to the Mesopotamian collection. You will undertake research into and make publicly accessible the collections of objects from Ancient Mesopotamia and other related collections across the Museum. This is an exciting and rare opportunity to help curate and undertake research into one of the world’s most important Mesopotamian collections spanning 4000 years of history, from the Sumerian times to the Assyrian period.

Job requirements: The successful candidate will have an MA / MSc in Ancient Near Eastern history and archaeology, experience of a temporary exhibition or gallery refurbishment, experience as a supervisor or director of a research or fieldwork project, experience of engaging the public in the relevant field, and experience of working in a Museum, University or environment that promotes Mesopotamia. Management experience of people, teams, projects, and budgets is also required.
