Role Summary:
- Ensure the safe storage, movement, and preparation of museum objects for display and loans.

Role Requirements:
- Good general education, GCSEs or equivalent.
- Interest in the Museum's collections.
- Manual dexterity and competent IT skills.
- Team player with excellent communication skills and initiative.
- Experience with hand tools and workshop equipment is desirable.
- Familiarity with databases, slinging, heavy lifting, and relevant licences are a plus.
The British Museum is looking for an Assistant Collection Manager in the Care & Access team. This role is primarily technical and involves all practical aspects of care and preservation of the British Museum collections. The post-holder will work as part of a team, and their activities will include the storage, movement, and preparation of objects for loans and display, and may take place across all Museum sites.
The role requires problem solving skills and a flexible approach to working. Key responsibilities include monitoring security of objects, maintaining them in good condition in storage, in transit and whilst on display, facilitating the movement, packing and display of objects across the collections, maintaining and updating essential object documentation, constructing mounts and installing objects in the Museum and at other venues, following Integrated Pest Management procedures, and supplying objects for study and supervising study rooms.
The ideal candidate should have a good general education including GCSEs or equivalent, a demonstrable interest in aspects of the Museum’s collections, manual dexterity, IT skills, understanding and appreciation of materials and objects, ability to work well as part of team, self-motivated and able to use initiative, good communicator, and maintaining a calm, approachable and professional manner in busy and demanding environments. Practical experience of hand tools and workshop equipment, familiarity with databases, slinging and heavy lifting training, full UK driving licence, and fork lift licence are desirable.
