Job Description:

We are looking for a Remote Sensing Scientist (Senior Scientist depending on experience) to join our Geospatial and Earth Observation team, to assist in developing cutting-edge methods for monitoring ecosystem change and GHG emissions in the carbon markets. You will work with data scientists and domain specialists on R&D, with engineering teams on production pipelines, and with ratings scientists on bespoke applications to specific carbon projects.

You will have a strong scientific background, and ideally industry experience, in satellite remote sensing applications in Earth and ecosystem sciences. We work with a variety of remote sensing data from both passive and active sensors, combined with ground measurements from our plot network and partner institutions. Candidates with fieldwork experience and/or particular domain specialisms (e.g. mangrove ecology, biomass estimation) or technical specialisms (e.g. LiDAR, SAR, machine learning) are especially encouraged to apply.

The ideal candidate will work from our London HQ or Amsterdam office, but we will consider applications for remote working on GMT hours. You will report to our Head of Remote Sensing, Dr Niels Andela, previously at Cardiff University and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. You will also work closely with our Data Science team led by Thomas Huijskens, formerly Associate Partner at McKinsey & Company and Senior Principal Data Scientist at QuantumBlack.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to innovations on a range of Earth observation applications for monitoring carbon and biodiversity, at local to national scales, using ground measurements and satellite-based training data.
  • Work with our engineers to deploy and maintain production pipelines, and with our ratings scientists and product team, to understand their needs and communicate results.
  • Build and strengthen research collaborations across academic, non-profit, and business communities.
  • Communicate internally and externally through blog posts, technical reports, webinars, and conferences.
  • You may be required to visit project sites, to meet with partners, clients, and to undertake rapid surveys.

You will be our ideal candidate if you:

  • Have a PhD and industry experience in satellite remote sensing, with strong knowledge of sensor technologies, their strengths and limitations, and fusion across sensor types.
  • Are highly motivated and have a track record of contributing to innovative research projects related to ecosystem dynamics and the carbon cycle. Experience of biodiversity mapping and monitoring is a plus.
  • Write clean, maintainable, scalable, and robust code in Python and SQL, and are familiar with collaborative coding best practices and continuous integration tooling.
  • Are familiar with some of the following: Postgres, PostGIS, Snowflake, AWS, GEE, Prefect, GitHub, QGIS
  • Are excited to work with people from a diverse range of backgrounds, spanning remote sensing, ecology, engineering, policy and finance, and from all corners of the world.
  • Are positive and kind. As a team and as a company, we believe in being kind over being nice. We are constantly giving and receiving constructive feedback and we are always trying to be empathetic.

Please know that even if you don’t have experience in all the areas above but think you could do a great job and are excited about building a great company culture, bringing transparency to the voluntary carbon market, and being part of a fast-growing team, we would love to hear from you!

What we’ll offer:

  • Competitive salary and equity in a rapidly growing VC-backed start-up through share options
  • Ability to learn and develop alongside a range of sector specialists from the worlds of science, economics, business, finance and more
  • 25 days leave (with additional time off between Christmas and New Year, and for your birthday)
  • Benefits package covering private medical insurance, dental, critical illness cover, income protection, life assurance, medical cash plan and cycle to work scheme (or a comparable package if you’re based overseas)
  • Health and wellness cash allowance
  • Enhanced parental leave
  • Regular social events
  • Opportunity to work remote or in our East London office space (Liverpool Street) with flexibility to work from home 2 days a week
  • Nomad working over the summer, allowing you to work from another country

Our interview process:

We have a quick turnaround time and will let you know as soon as we can after each stage. Ask ANYTHING. The whole process is as much about making sure we are a fit for you as much as the other way around.

  • Initial screening interview (20 mins)
  • Second interview(s) + skills test
  • Final interview with senior management
  • Reference checks + offer

We value diversity at BeZero Carbon. We need a team that brings different perspectives and backgrounds together to build the tools needed to make the voluntary carbon market transparent. We are therefore committed to not discriminate based on race, religion, colour, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, veteran status, age, or disability.
