The European Space Agency (ESA) is a beacon of innovation and diversity, leading the charge in the European space sector. ESA is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment and is actively seeking qualified applicants from a variety of backgrounds to join their team. This is an exceptional opportunity for those passionate about space exploration and advanced technologies to make a significant impact in developing launchers and spacecraft. Women are especially encouraged to apply to support gender diversity in the field.

  • Provide technical support and consultancy in launcher and spacecraft propulsion.
  • Contribute to the preparation of technology work plans, focusing on systems and new propulsion technologies.
  • A PhD in engineering, aerospace engineering, physics, or chemistry is required.
  • Preference for candidates with a recent PhD (within the last five years).
  • Experience in a laboratory setting and a solid grasp of electrochemistry.
  • Understanding of spacecraft propulsion subsystems and equipment.
  • Proficiency in English or French, with additional languages being a plus.

Eligibility extends to nationals from ESA Member States, Associate Member States, Cooperating States, and certain European Cooperating States. Join ESA's mission to push the boundaries of human knowledge and technology in space.

The European Space Agency is an equal opportunity employer, committed to achieving diversity within the workforce and creating an inclusive working environment. We welcome applications from all qualified candidates irrespective of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, beliefs, age, disability or other characteristics. Applications from women are encouraged.

The role entails providing technical support and consultancy in launcher propulsion (liquid propulsion, including storable and cryogenic technologies, and solid propulsion) and spacecraft propulsion (various chemical propulsion technologies) to the Agency project teams responsible for developing launchers and spacecraft, throughout all project phases. You will also contribute to the preparation of work plans in the areas of launcher and spacecraft propulsion in the Agency’s technological programmes, with a particular contribution expected on systems and new propulsion aspects.

Job requirements include a recently completed or close to completing a PhD in engineering, aerospace engineering, physics or chemistry. Preference will be given to applications submitted by candidates who have received their PhD within the past five years. You should also have experience of working in a laboratory environment, a good understanding of electrochemistry, and basic knowledge of state-of-the-art spacecraft propulsion subsystems and equipment. The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.

Please note that applications are only considered from nationals of one of the following States: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Nationals from Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia and Slovenia, as Associate Member States, or Canada as a Cooperating State, can apply as well as those from Bulgaria, Croatia and Cyprus as European Cooperating States (ECS).
