  • Role Summary:
    • Spearhead the development of high-precision battery assessment techniques.
    • Implement advanced methods like HPC and EIS for battery diagnostics.
    • Engage in the entire battery development lifecycle, from inception to in-orbit operations.
  • Role Requirements:
    • PhD in chemical engineering, chemistry or material sciences, focused on lithium-ion batteries or related fields.
    • Recent PhD graduates (within the last five years) preferred.
    • Experience in the space sector or battery industry is a plus.
    • Proficiency in battery cycling hardware and software, data analysis and simulation tools such as Python and MATLAB.
    • Fluency in English or French, with additional ESA Member State languages beneficial.
    • Applicants must be nationals from ESA Member States or Associate/Cooperating States.

The Internal Research Fellow will be based in the Energy Storage Section, Power Systems, EMC and Space Environment Division, Electrical Department, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality at the European Space Agency (ESA). The role entails spearheading the development of advanced techniques for assessing the health and performance of batteries for space applications. Using your expertise in high-precision coulometry (HPC), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and other relevant methodologies, you will contribute to battery diagnostics in different phases of the cell and battery development, from technology definition to end of life in orbit.

Job requirements include a PhD in chemical engineering, chemistry or material sciences with a focus on lithium-ion batteries, batteries or related technologies. Preference will be given to applications submitted by candidates who have received their PhD within the past five years. You should also have experience in the space sector or battery industry, familiarity with battery cycling hardware and software, as well as in subsequent data analysis and interpretations. Experience with data analysis and simulation tools such as Python and MATLAB is also required.

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
