UNU-VIE co-hosts the Secretariat of the Global Shield against Climate Risks, a pivotal initiative designed to enhance disaster finance and bolster protection for vulnerable communities against climate disasters.

  • Lead the planning and execution of significant events, including the Global Shield Annual Forum, workshops, and side events at international conferences.
  • Design and facilitate internal and external training events on climate and disaster risk financing and insurance (CDRFI).
  • Support strategic communications and enhance the Global Shield’s positioning and visibility in key political domains.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Event Management, or a related field.
  • At least 4 years of experience in event management within multilateral, humanitarian, or public/private sectors.
  • Expertise in climate change, disaster risk management, and finance.
  • Proficiency in English, with preference given to candidates fluent in Spanish or French.

The selected candidate will operate under a Consultant Contract for up to 24 months within a 36-month period. Remuneration aligns with experience, including paid annual leave and mission travel coverage if required.

UNU-VIE is one of 14 research and training Institutes that comprise the think tanks in the UNU system. UNU-VIE is Co-hosting the Secretariat of the G7-V20 Global Shield against Climate Risks (GS). The initiative aims to increase protection for vulnerable people by providing and facilitating substantially more and better pre-arranged finance against disasters.

The Global Shield Secretariat serves as the coordinating entity for the Global Shield, it provides the technical support for the implementation of the Global Shield solutions aligned to the objectives. The Secretariat coordinates amongst stakeholders, guides the fundraising and replenishment of Global Shield funds, drives the strategic development of the initiative, and engages with relevant global climate policy processes, especially on climate and disaster risk financing and insurance (CDRFI). The GS Secretariat is co-hosted in two organizations, led by a UNU-hosted Co-Director on Strategy and Engagement and a GIZ-hosted Co-Director on Institutional Development and Implementation.

Responsibilities

An Event Management Specialist will be recruited who supports the Global Shield Secretariat in its event management and reinforces the Team on Communications and Events. This function will particularly focus on the conceptualisation, organisation, implementation of own and contribution to external events to support the GS Secretariat Team in positioning the Global Shield. Events can cover different dimensions - from larger political agendas, e.g. the COP, an annual GS conference to small-cap regional capacity building workshops. The function aims at increasing the visibility of the Global Shield strengthening its reputation.

1. Event Management

  • Support the design and implementation of the Global Shield Annual Forum and respective Annual Workshops as the “go to platform” for the Global Shield Community; identify new formats and interactive approaches, including sound management of the project together with the Communications and Event Team
  • Conceptually design and implement Global Shield branded events, e.g. side events at the Conference of the Parties (COP), and market the events

2. Design internal and external trainings

  • Design and implement training / capacity building events on CDRFI and pre-arranged finance, e.g. in the context of the GS In-Country Processes together with the respective Team members of the GS Secretariat
  • Support the Communications and Events Team in the annual update of the communications strategy and of the annual communication concept
  • Support of the Secretariat’s team in the planning and organisation of the Global Shield Board Member Meetings

3. Support Communications Team and strategic engagement

  • Communicate and market best practice cases and evidence of benefit of CDRFI and pre-arranged finance, identify the relevant events together with the Communications and Events Team.
  • Support the political and strategic positioning of the Global Shield against Climate Risks (GS) through an active communication approach, constantly monitoring ongoing relevant political developments

4. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

1) Education and certification

Completed Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Communications, Journalism, Event Management or other relevant subjects.

2) Required skills and experience

  • At least 4 years of working experience in event management, communications or public relation roles in multilateral organisations, development organisations, the humanitarian or other relevant public or private sector roles
  • Knowledge of climate change adaptation, disaster risk management, and disaster risk finance
  • Sound project management experience and organisational skills
  • Experience in working with high-level representatives of governments, media representatives, civil society, private sector, and development organisations
  • Very good oral and written communication skills
  • Other Desirable Skills: proactive, structured, self-motivated, resilience, design-skills, layouting skills, strong networker and conceptual developer.

3) Language Requirements

  • Fluency in English is required
  • Fluency in Spanish or French is considered an asset
  • Knowledge of another UN official working language is an asset.

Duration

The successful candidate will be retained under a Consultant Contract (CTC). Consultants engaged by UNU may not provide services for more than twenty-four (24) months in a thirty-six (36) month period.

UNU is not liable for any taxes that may be levied on the remuneration you receive under this contract. Payment of any such taxes remains the sole responsibility of CTC holders.



Remuneration

Remuneration will be commensurate with experience.This contract has an entitlement to paid annual leave.

Travel considerations

Should “mission travel” be required, UNU will pay for travel. However, this will be subject to the following prerequisites: Medical Clearance, Security Clearance through the Travel Request Information Process (TRIP) system, completion of the BSAFE online course, travel Visa, and liability waiver. Trip prerequisites will be met at the expense of the consultant.

Travel cost will be calculated based on economy class travel, regardless of the length of travel. Costs for accommodation, meals and incidentals must not exceed applicable daily subsistence allowance (DSA) rates, as promulgated by the International Civil Service Commission (ICSC at http://icsc.un.org).

As soon as possible.
