  • Solid experience in spacecraft thermal engineering and related technologies.
  • Proficiency in space thermal control analysis tools, such as ESATAN-TMS.
  • Experience in cryogenics may be necessary for certain missions.

ESA is dedicated to creating an inclusive and diverse work environment and encourages applications from all qualified candidates, with a particular call to women and individuals with disabilities. Accommodations are provided to support our diverse workforce.

Applicants may undergo selection tests during the recruitment process and will be subject to a basic security screening before appointment in line with ESA's security protocols.

We are looking for a Thermal Engineer to join our team at the Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality. Our Thermal Control Section provides functional support to ESA projects and carries out technological research (R&D) in the fields of thermal control, including cryogenics, two-phase heat transport and thermal protection. We are a key centre of competence in space thermal engineering, covering the complete temperature range, and our team consists of around 25 engineers supporting all ESA projects and the development of thermal hardware technologies.

The Role: As a Thermal Engineer, you will be providing expert technical support and consultancy to ESA projects, programmes and general studies in the field of thermal control throughout all project phases. You will participate in feasibility studies, project reviews and the evaluation of procurement proposals. You will perform analysis as required to support thermal subsystem definition and participate in thermal testing activities and correlating analysis and test results. You will also contribute to the definition of technology development requirements and work plans for the Agency’s technology programmes.

Job Requirements: You should have a master's degree in mechanical engineering or physics. Experience in spacecraft thermal engineering, related technologies and general knowledge of space thermal control analysis tools, for example ESATAN-TMS is required. Experience in cryogenics may be required to support scientific and Earth observation missions.

Benefits: We are an equal opportunity employer, committed to achieving diversity within the workforce and creating an inclusive working environment. We therefore welcome applications from all qualified candidates irrespective of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, beliefs, age, disability or other characteristics. Applications from women are encouraged. We value diversity, and we welcome people with disabilities. Whenever possible, we seek to accommodate individuals with disabilities by providing the necessary support at the workplace.

Application Details: During the recruitment process, the Agency may request applicants to undergo selection tests. Additionally, successful candidates will need to undergo basic screening before appointment, which will be conducted by an external background screening service, in compliance with the European Space Agency's security procedures.
