About us
School Space aims to create thriving schools at the centre of thriving communities. We do this by partnering with schools across the UK to hire out their spaces in the evenings and weekends to a range of community groups. The income generated is used by our partner schools to improve educational outcomes and facilities for their students, in addition to building a stronger connection with the surrounding community.
Our culture
Since we were founded as a social enterprise by two school students in 2011, we've grown to become a tight knit team of around 25 people who are united by a goal of changing the education sector for the better. We also have a fabulous remote team of over 150 Community Connectors who work at our partner schools in the evenings and weekends.
You will become part of a team who have generated over £5.5 million for schools, taken part in prestigious programs by top names such as Techstars and Goldman Sachs, and been recognised as one of Escape the City’s 100 best organisations to escape to, finalists in the UK’s best Social Enterprise award, and winners of Digital Agenda’s Impact Tech award.
From working directly with the founders, to regular training days, daily stand-ups and socials, we encourage all team members to contribute to our culture and aim to develop every team member at School Space. We are a fast paced work place with a friendly atmosphere - working at School Space will expose you to many new learning opportunities and a chance to have a say in the growth and development of a company striving to create a big impact. Our core values are Transparency, Positivity, Initiative, Community, Passion and Learning - and if selected to interview with us we will be assessing whether you evidence these.
Why does this role exist?
Our operation covers 60 schools (and growing), 150+ incredible part-time Community Connectors (the amazing people who open and close our schools) and thousands of events annually. Our Community Connectors staff each school in the evenings and weekends, and our School Operations Managers would line manage this team to achieve success on the ground.
The School Operations Manager is responsible for managing a group of our Community Connectors to fulfil our school contract obligations. You will work closely with our People and Account Manager teams, but it is your role to ensure our on the ground team is empowered to do their job and keep the schools you work with delighted with our service.
What will you be accountable for?
Training and on the ground engagement
From launching new venues to spot checking performance and on the ground training sessions, you will be regularly visiting your schools and the staff who work there to ensure that performance is high and the school and customers see a fantastic service level from us.
Smooth Operations
You will be responsible for making sure our operation of local team members runs without a hitch. The primary success factor involved with this is ensuring that our events are serviced by an engaged and well trained Community Connector team, and we’re not letting any customers or schools down.
Line Management
Whilst most of our remote team work between 5-15 hours per week, they need a point of contact, and you must master supporting them individually whilst drawing on others in your team (Community Leaders, who also work in the field) to balance this responsibility.
Team Working
You will oversee junior team members' work and provide support and advice on dealing with tricky issues. You will work with them to manage their workload and ensure tasks are completed to a high standard.
How will you know it’s going brilliantly?
- You are achieving a high satisfaction score from our schools and contracts are retained
- The users of our venues are scoring our service/schools highly on our feedback reports with any staffing issues being tackled head on with swift resolution
- All Community Connectors and Team Leaders are completing their role correctly
- Community Connector staff churn remains low and staff have a high satisfaction and engagement score on their surveys
What will help you succeed in this role?
- Experience in leading communities, or managing large groups of people to success.
- Empathy and excellent people skills - an ability to manage but also inspire via ‘low touch’ methods including innovative techniques.
- Excellent time management and prioritisation skills.
- Excellent verbal communication skills, comfort using basic tech tools such as slack.
- The ability and desire to work in a fast-paced, challenging environment with peers who challenge you to constantly improve.
- Comfort in working evenings and weekends, as training will have to be done in these hours
