Volunteer Climate Change Educator, Sessional Worker

What will you be doing?

We are looking for volunteers to help us provide schools with climate change workshops, talks and assemblies. You will be added to a roster and asked for your availability for any school requests we receive from primary schools in the area. We work in-person in the South-West, most notably in the Bath and Bristol areas.    You would be required to make your way to the school on your own, using public transport is fine and encouraged if this works for you! You don't need a car, but sometimes it is helpful to bring any workshop materials. All expenses will be covered by WWW.    The talks you will provide will last one hour and workshops can last between two hours and up to a full school day (9:00 am - 3:00 pm), depending on the session requested from the school. There are busy times of the year, for example, the autumn and winter terms have a higher demand for workshops, while the spring and summer terms are less busy.    You will be trained to put on these events by the Director, but a good understanding of climate change, the Arctic and Antarctic biomes, and the impact global warming has on these environments is crucial. You must feel confident speaking to groups of people and keeping the attention of children. 

What are we looking for?

We are looking for a volunteer who has good personable skills, fantastic time management, good public speaking and organisation skills, with a preference for those that have been in a teaching role before.    We are looking for someone who is reliable and can commit to getting to the schools on time for the sessions they agree to and provide a fun learning environment for the children we work with.    This volunteer would need to have a good understanding of the science of and the impacts of climate change, and how this affects the polar regions and the UK. 

What difference will you make?

You will be directly educating the next generation about climate change. Since we began our work in 2016, we have taught nearly 25,000 children across the UK! In the last year alone, we taught nearly 4,500 children, the highest amount ever recorded for Wicked Weather Watch.    The younger generation faces a monumental environmental challenge that surpasses anything mankind has ever seen. Climate change is an issue that affects everyone and its impact is felt all over the world. Educating children about this crisis is of utmost importance, as it is a complicated issue with far-reaching consequences. Despite this, climate change isn't currently taught in primary schools, even with 60% of children being either very or extremely worried about it.    For many children, a visit from WWW may be their first educational climate change experience, so it's important to make these sessions positive and empowering. Our work is only becoming more important as the effects of climate change worsen and eco-anxiety increases among young people.    You will help us to excite pupils about climate change by learning about the polar regions. These environments are magical and captivate young minds, which connects children to their world and inspires them to create positive change. This work empowers pupils to pledge to take small yet impactful actions following our sessions and encourages them to positively impact the planet.
