Role Summary:

  • Align internal stakeholder requirements and delivery plans for offshore cleanup systems.
  • Engage with suppliers, partners, and subcontractors for optimal equipment sourcing.
  • Oversee the design, manufacturing, and testing of electronics/software within objectives.
  • Ensure project deliverables are achieved on time, within budget, and with high quality.
  • Implement technical improvements for existing systems and operations.

Role Requirements:

  • BSc or MSc in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Software, or Offshore) with project management experience.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in instrumentation projects, with a preference for backgrounds in innovation or maritime industries.
  • Proficiency in English and a proven track record in multidisciplinary project management.
  • Hands-on, result-driven individual with strong communication skills and the ability to structure complex situations.
  • Intrinsic motivation for environmental sustainability and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, challenging environment.

MISSION TO METRICS
In order to achieve our mission, The Ocean Cleanup needs to design, develop and deploy offshore cleanup systems that extract plastic out of our oceans. For that we are implementing additional technology to improve our ability to detect high density areas (hotspots) of plastics in the ocean. The equipment used for this will be (customized) drones and drifters. 
 
You will be responsible to get to an internally aligned requirements and delivery plan. Then engage with suppliers, partners and subcontractors to enable the right sourcing of equipment. And finally ensure the products are designed, manufactured and tested within quality objectives, budget and planning. 
You will report to the Head of the Retention System and work closely together with the project leads and project managers to achieve your objectives.

THE ASSIGNMENT
The Ocean Cleanup develops technology to rid the world’s oceans of plastic. The Project Lead for Hotspot Detection sets the requirements for instrumentation on Ocean Systems, aligns with key internal stakeholders, ensures development projects are controlled and takes care of improvements when the systems are operational. 

RESPONSIBILITIES
As Project Lead for Hotspot Detection, your primary role is to lead the successful delivery of electrical equipment and ensure the embedment of equipment in an operational environment. Your responsibilities include:

  • Aligning with internal stakeholders on requirements
  • Using your engineering skills to develop creative concepts to develop/ improve our systems and operation
  • Preparing, scheduling, coordinating, and monitoring assigned scopes from conception to execution
  • Developing scope of work and requirements and acceptance criteria for testing
  • Coordinating with contractors to ensure project deliverables meet their milestones on time, within budget, (people) planning and quality objectives
  • Taking care of technical improvements of existing systems
  • Cooperating and communicating with the Head of Retention System and other project participants and collaborating with discipline Engineers. 
  • Supporting the project teams hands-on to achieve their tasks and objectives  

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • BSc or MSc degree in electrical, mechanical, software or offshore engineering with Project Management experience
  • Experience with electronics / software (engineering) and product development
  • At least 8 years of relevant work experience in instrumentation projects, preferably in a similar demanding field that prepared you for this job (for example in innovation, subsea, maritime industry, fishery et cetera)
  • Demonstrated expertise in project management / lead engineering, with a particular emphasis on managing and coordinating multidisciplinary projects is a plus.
  • Fluent in English

  • You realize that a certain amount of ground work (document control, chasing people for planning updates, administrative task et cetera) is part of the job and project success
