Fundamentals Lead

Department: Strategy & Operations

Employment Type: Permanent - Full Time

Location: UK - London

Reporting To: Alexa Strobel

Compensation: £72,000 - £100,000 / year

Description

The Fundamentals Lead is a role sitting within the cross-functional Strategy & Analysis team supporting critical functions for Field across all teams and geographies. In this role, you will drive action and have a major impact on key business decisions - this is not a theoretical consulting type of role. As we expand our operations in the low-carbon flexibility space, we need high quality intelligence and analysis of our target markets, as the basis for strategic decision-making, and to support fundraising. We also need to ensure our in-house fundamentals model is fed with precise input data, so we can use the results to decide how to execute hedges and tolls on the medium term and trades in the short term on our operational assets, driving real business value.

In the Fundamentals Lead role, you will be responsible for the maintenance of key models and inputs, ensuring that they are fully up to date in a rapidly changing market environment. In particular, by synthesising information from a wide variety of sources (e.g. GB and European TSOs, third-party technical and market advisors) this role is key for the running of our internal fundamentals model, used by our Treasury and Technology teams to execute hedges, tolls and trades. You will lead and independently execute market analyses and research projects, and present these to the senior management team and Field investors to drive decisions. You will be expected to own subject matter expertise for the company in this area and expand the competencies of the team as a whole (e.g. in energy market fundamentals, market mechanisms, model development, etc).

Key Responsibilities

  1. Own the sourcing and processing market fundamentals data for GB and support the development of our in-house fundamentals model: Research, analyse and synthesise key energy market information (capacity mix, demand, commodities, prices, etc) to maintain the data inputs for our in-house fundamentals model in GB. Build and maintain tools for efficient processing of data inputs and ensure they are kept up to date. Liaise with the model developers to challenge and improve our in-house fundamentals model, and serve as a thought partner for development of new features or ways to model markets.

  2. Produce high-quality electricity market research and analysis: Carry out primary research, including developing models as relevant or running scenarios using our in-house fundamentals model. Produce robust analysis on electricity market fundamentals, and quickly and precisely present the conclusions with clear actions and implications for Field. Present outcomes to senior leadership, investors and/or the board. Examples of past research projects include:

    1. Analysing the impact of regulatory modifications to establish Field position.
    2. Analysing battery buildout in GB and Europe and impact on our revenues.
    3. Determining Field capacity market bidding strategy.

  3. Produce regular board reporting and updates: create monthly updates for the board on forecast vs actual revenues, complete ad-hoc requested analyses (examples in the past include deep-dive on fundamentals market drivers in GB), regularly update the business about short- to medium-term market trends to support the operation of our assets.

  4. Own external revenue curves for GB: maintain relationships with external revenue curve providers, regularly assess which one(s) we should be using (in terms of provider, cycling assumptions, etc) and provide updates to the business on latest forecasts and changes and impacts for the business.

  5. Monitor key market developments and changes in the drivers of value in merchant markets: Communicate key market updates and conduct analysis on expected impacts of recent market developments on Field’s business case.

  6. Provide energy market expertise: Together with Analysis colleagues, provide technical expertise around the energy and ancillary services markets to the wider business and senior stakeholders.
