Role Summary:
- Lead cross-functional efforts to enhance product experience and ensure high-quality connections between customers and service professionals.
- Collaborate with product management, engineering, design, and other teams.
- Utilize analytical skills to guide business decisions and product strategies.
- Manage and mentor a team of talented data scientists.
- Develop a data science roadmap and coordinate with adjacent teams for a cohesive approach.
Role Requirements:
- At least 7 years in analytics, data science, or economics.
- Minimum of 2 years managing analysts or data scientists.
- Proficient in customer lifetime value analysis and segment identification to prioritize opportunities.
- Adept at managing stakeholders with varying priorities across multiple domains.
- Experience in designing, analyzing, and interpreting experiments.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage with cross-functional teams and senior leadership.
- A Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degree in Statistics, Engineering, Analytics, Math, Computer Science, or Operations Research.
While not mandatory, you'll gain an edge with experience in two-sided marketplaces, data extraction, statistical analysis, and proficiency in SQL, Python, R, or Stata.

About the Data Science Team
The Data Science team empowers Thumbtack to use data to guide business decisions. We collaborate with partners across the company to solve the most analytically challenging problems -- everything from how we set prices across hundreds of local services categories, to evaluating the impact of a new business model on company performance, to identifying early predictors of high-quality customers. We are a tight-knit, intellectually curious team that is committed to improving Thumbtack and improving each other.
About the Role
The Manager, Data Science will be a cross-functional leader who will help us build out an effective product experience and matching effectiveness to ensure high quality connections are made between Thumbtack customers and pros. As a part of our data science team, you’ll work collaboratively with peers across product management, engineering, design, applied science, and other functions. The ideal candidate is able to lead others with analytical rigor, influence senior stakeholders with data, clearly articulate and execute top priorities and last but not least, grow, motivate and maximize the impact of a team of experienced product analysts.
Responsibilities:
The Manager, Data Science has a well-balanced mix of responsibilities including deep analytics, team management, product strategy and product development.
- Influence Thumbtack’s vision and execution in running an effective marketplace
- Partner with leaders from product management, engineering, design, marketing and go-to-market teams to execute on our product visio
- Manage, mentor and grow data scientists
- Set up a data science roadmap, identify key questions that will unblock product development and liaise with technical stakeholders on data and experimentation infrastructure
- Coordinate with data science leaders in adjacent product teams to run a well-managed, productive and motivated Thumbtack data science team
What you'll need

- 7+ years of experience in analytics, data science or economics
- 2+ years of experience managing analysts or data scientists
- Experience analyzing customer lifetime value, identifying profitable customer segments, and prioritizing product/marketing opportunities to serve customers
- Experience managing stakeholders with competing priorities in areas such as Product Management, Design, Engineering and Marketing
- Experience scoping, analyzing, and communicating results of experiments
- Strong communication skills and ability to build strong relationships cross-functionally and with senior leadership
- Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctoral degree in one of the following areas; Statistics, Engineering, Analytics, Math, Computer Science, Operations Research
Bonus points if you have
- A well-balanced combination of big-picture thinking, ability to thrive in ambiguity, exceptional problem solving skills and patience to teach others and uphold a high bar
- Experience working on a 2-sided marketplace and related testing methodologies
- Current or prior technical depth in data extraction, statistical analysis, modeling and general familiarity with data languages and statistical tools (SQL, Python, R, Stata)

For candidates living in San Francisco / Bay Area, New York City, or Seattle metros, the expected salary range for the role is currently $191,250 - $247,500. Actual offered salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as calibrated job level, qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role.
