  • Role Summary:
    • Participate in a 12-week Leon H. Carter newsroom internship, either remotely or in New York City, from May to August 2025.
    • Join the MLB team and get involved in all aspects of the newsroom operations.
    • Contribute to MLB coverage through a variety of writing assignments, live blogs, and special projects.
    • Collaborate with editors and team members for in-depth reporting and immediate news response.
    • Potential for in-person reporting based on location and assignments.
  • Role Requirements:
    • Must be an undergraduate in junior or senior year, or a spring 2025 graduate.
    • Able to commit to a 30-40 hour work week.
    • Prior newsroom internship experience is beneficial.
    • Must possess flexibility, adaptability, and a deep passion for sports.
    • Willingness to travel to New York City if required.

About the Role

The Athletic is accepting applications for its Leon H. Carter newsroom internship, a 12-week program either remote or based in New York City, which will run from May to August 2025. The intern will be embedded on our MLB team, which will expose the intern to every facet of the newsroom. The mission of The Athletic’s internship program is to attract and develop the industry’s next stars. The intern will help shape our most informative coverage while helping to advance our goal to be the top destination for sports news around the world.

This is a remote internship that may require some travel to New York City. Candidates based in New York City have the option of working on-site in the New York office.

The rate of pay for this role is $20.00 USD per hour.

Responsibilities

Attend daily weekday meetings of the MLB news enterprise team. Accept projects assigned by the MLB news enterprise editors, whether it is contributing reporting to projects being led by other team members or taking the lead on specific assignments that can be executed during the offseason. Work writing shifts focused on immediate news response. Contribute to live blogs and previews during special coverage periods. Be available to report stories remotely (video and phone calls, emails, texts). Be available for in-person reporting, whether it be games or press availability, dependent on location. Be available to take any special assignments from the desk’s leadership team.

Requirements

Undergraduate students who are ideally in their junior year, senior year, or a spring 2025 graduate. Ability to work a 30-40 hour work week. Previous newsroom internship experience is a plus. Flexibility: ability to adapt to fast-paced work environments where needs and priorities can change quickly. Deep knowledge of and a passion for sports. This is a remote internship that may require some travel to New York City. Candidates based in New York City have the option of working on-site in the New York office.

Provide an essay between 500-700 words explaining why you should be considered by The Athletic for this internship, including but not limited to your main area of interest - storytelling of baseball. Attach 2 letters of recommendation. Provide a portfolio of at least 10 relevant samples showcasing strong journalism skills.
