What will you be doing?

The Society is seeking a suitably-experienced Trustee to be appointed as Treasurer. The treasurer will take the lead in managing the Society's finances, setting budgets for its activities, ensuring value-for-money on its spending and investments, and preparing reports to the board and membership.

What are we looking for?

Interested applicants should demonstrate a thorough knowledge of accounting best practices and ideally possess appropriate experience in managing the financial affairs of a small charity or similar organisation.  Candidates should be able to work largely autonomously, but also able to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholder groups including trustees, members, and external parties. Experience with fundraising and/or grant applications is a plus.  An interest in walking (or other users of rights of way) and a love of the outdoors is desirable.

What difference will you make?

As a Trustee you will be responsible for the strategic leadership and governance of the Society's charitable activities and the achievement of its charitable purposes in line with charity law. As treasurer, you will manage the day-to-day financial activities, prepare financial reports for board meetings, and plan forward-looking budgets. We are looking for someone who can support our new five year strategy and develop a funding strategy for the Society, including grant applications. You will be helping us to ensure public rights of way remain open and the public continue to enjoy access to open spaces. Your work will ensure we can continue to help walkers and all other users of the network by funding bridges and other improvements, erecting signposts so people can find their way, and keeping paths open by monitoring rights of way.  Trustees are required to attend the Trustee Board (Managing Committee) about ten times per year. Trustees may take on further special responsibilities, both directly and through the medium of sub-committees. Meetings are currently held during the day (Friday) via Zoom or in person in Stockport and are of 2 hours duration (approx.). The minimum time commitment for this role is 1-2 hours per week. Trustees are elected/re-elected on an annual basis at each AGM held in May, in line with the requirements of our constitution. Our trustees are located across our region, including South Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Cheshire and Greater Manchester. All our Trustees are volunteers and receive travel expenses in line with our expenses policy. If appointed a full induction and online trustee training is provided to support you in this role.
