What will you be doing?

Are you a hands-on tech leader with a passion for making a difference? The Criminal Justice Hub is seeking a volunteer Head of Technical to oversee the development and technical management of our online resource platform. You’ll be responsible for leading a small team of volunteer developers, ensuring the platform is reliable, secure, and optimised to meet the needs of individuals and communities navigating the criminal justice system in England and Wales. In this role, you will:

Lead, mentor, and support a team of volunteer developers, providing guidance on best practices, coding standards, and problem-solving. Take ownership of the platform’s architecture and infrastructure, ensuring its scalability, security, and performance. Work closely with the project management team and content leads to align technical solutions with organisational goals. Contribute hands-on to the development process, working directly with GitHub, Azure, and Drupal to implement and maintain features. Oversee the integration of new tools and technologies, ensuring they enhance the platform’s functionality and user experience.

This role is ideal for a certified technical leader who is as comfortable rolling up their sleeves and coding as they are overseeing high-level strategy and team development.

Technical Leadership Experience: Proven experience managing and mentoring developers, with a strong ability to oversee projects and ensure they align with organisational goals. Hands-On Development Skills: Advanced proficiency with GitHub, Azure, and Drupal; ready to jump in and contribute code or troubleshoot issues as needed. Certifications: Relevant certifications in development, cloud management, or project management are required to demonstrate your technical expertise. Problem-Solving Ability: Adept at identifying challenges and finding practical, scalable solutions that improve platform performance and user experience. Strategic Vision with Practical Approach: Ability to balance big-picture thinking with a willingness to engage in the day-to-day development work.
