As a Treasure Registrar, you will be part of the team managing the administration of finds reported under the Treasure Act 1996. The daily responsibilities of this role include:
- Registering finds
- Updating and organizing files and databases
- Coordinating with various parties such as Finds Liaison Officers and local museum curators to confirm details and disposition of the finds
- Liaising with coroners to support their duties under the Treasure Act
The role requires:
- A strong educational background, preferably to GCSE or equivalent
- Proficient computer skills, specifically experience with databases and Microsoft Office software
- An understanding of the types of artifacts that are classified as 'Treasure'
- An Interest in British archaeology
- Proven administrative and accurate record-keeping skills, including for finances

The British Museum, founded in 1753, is home to a remarkable collection that spans over two million years of human history and culture. The Museum is one of the leading visitor attractions and its world-famous collection includes the Rosetta Stone, the Parthenon sculptures, Egyptian mummies, the Admonitions Scroll, and the Amaravati sculptures.

The role of the Treasure Registrar involves carrying out the administration of finds reported under the Treasure Act 1996. The successful candidate will join the existing team of a Senior Treasure Registrar, 2 Treasure Registration Coordinators, one other full-time registrar, and one part-time registrar to work on the processing of treasure finds. This post will be expected to participate in various aspects of treasure administration focused on the initial steps in the treasure process.

Key areas of responsibility include the registration of finds, updating and organising files and databases on a daily basis, liaising with Finds Liaison Officers (FLOs) of the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS), local museum curators and archaeologists to obtain details of finds and to confirm disposition. The role also involves liaising with coroners to ensure that the BM properly supports and advises them in their duties under the Treasure Act and that the BM is informed of inquest verdicts.

Job requirements include a good general education to GCSE or equivalent, general computer literacy, specifically experience of databases and Microsoft office software, knowledge of the types of artefacts that are Treasure, interest in British archaeology, administrative experience, and accurate record-keeping, including that of finances.
