Volunteer Trustee with governance experience to join our high performing charity

What will you be doing?

Rainbow faces a challenging yet exciting future as we navigate our path through changes to the way our infrastructure support is funded, shape our health and well-being programmes, grow our youth project and expand our consulting offer. To do this we need trustees with sound governance experience but who also bring complementary skills to our board such as lived experience, social care, legal, and training. Apart from attendance at our quarterly board meetings, we expect trustees to join one or more of our subcommittees - audit, remuneration, communications - and occasional ad hoc meetings. We are keen to ensure that our board is current and that trustees find the role rewarding so training and opportunities for personal development are offered. 

What are we looking for?

Primarily we are looking for people with good knowledge and experience of governance and an understanding of how that encompasses strategic direction, oversight and support for the executive team. However, we have identified gaps in our board skills and experience the we would like to address. We would like to have people with lived experience of issues we address through our projects. These include support for people experiencing loneliness and isolation, poverty and disadvantage, young people becoming disengaged from education, and health inequalities. A probable move to new premises at some point in the future means we could benefit from a trustee with legal experience. We are also keen to embrace the potential of AI so knowledge and experience in this discipline would be welcomed. Rainbow is committed to supporting the people of Harlow and its environs which means our projects are founded and evolve according the changing needs of our community. Consequently, our board must be imaginative and open-minded about our strategic direction and supportive of our excellent CEO and her senior management team. In addition, our trustees are required to be diligent about oversight of accounts and committed to the charity providing high quality services that truly benefit users and deliver good value for money for funders. Maintaining our enviable reputation with all our stakeholders is crucial to us. Finally, and most importantly, we need trustees who are passionate about contributing to Rainbow's success and to making a difference for Harlow and its community.
