What will you be doing?

Unity Works exists to increase the numbers of people with a learning disability in work. This currently sits at a devastating 4.7%, whilst we know that 65% of people with a learning disability want to be in work. At Unity Works, we have long believed that people with a learning disability need and deserve access to employment and training opportunities in order to reach their full potential. Therefore, we’ve made it our mission to go above and beyond in creating opportunities, training and inclusive workplace experiences for people with a learning disability to showcase their talents and claim the future of their choice. Our delivery includes:

Skills and learning provision including training placements across our social enterprises and adult community learning; Supported employment contracts, supported internships; B2B social enterprises

Alongside this, Unity Works delivers disability awareness training and workshops to employers looking to make their workplaces more inclusive spaces. We also engage with our partners to advocate for change to local and central government policy. We are also part of the Thera Group, led by a registered charity, Thera Trust. Founded in 1998, the Thera Group now provides a range of support across the UK for around 3,000 people with a learning disability through a group of 14 not-for-profit companies, including Unity Works.

What are we looking for?

Get in touch with us if you can offer:

A strong commitment to our mission to reducing the learning disability employment gap Experience working at a senior level in either financial services or the social enterprise sector (particularly in relation to strategy and growth) A willingness to promote the rights of people with a learning disability Strong networking skills and a desire to use professional contacts to support Unity Works’ mission. A strategic perspective with a growth mindset The ability to monitor and assess company performance and key risks Good listening skills and an understanding of how to add constructively to discussions A willingness to challenge respectfully when necessary An eagerness to build new relationships and become part of a team

Although previous board experience is desirable, we are also happy to receive applications from those looking for a first board role.

What difference will you make?

You’ll make sure that Unity Works grows its impact, whether that is through supporting more people with a learning disability into work, providing new training opportunities across our social enterprises or engaging with new employers about making their workplaces more inclusive. In your trustee role, you will complement the executive team, bringing skills that will benefit the whole board. This is a unique opportunity to use your skills and experience to make a difference in the lives of people with a learning disability.
