Description

Core to Field’s mission is developing and constructing energy storage assets, and this Project Engineer role is right at the heart of that mission. We're seeking a dynamic individual to manage engineering activities through the pre-construction, detailed design, construction, and commissioning phases of our BESS assets. This will initially focus on UK projects with over 400MW of projects at various stages of design, construction and commissioning in 2025.

You would report directly to our Head of Construction and work closely with our Project Managers, our Contractors and the DNO/TO. You’d also be supported by specialists on topics such as health and safety, grid code, battery systems, planning, procurement, legal and commercial management.

You should have a strong electrical engineering background and significant experience in the delivery of grid-connected energy projects. It would be preferable if you had experience delivering projects at transmission level. BESS experience would be beneficial but is not essential.

Key Responsibilities

Managing pre-construction engineering activities (following project development or acquisition)

  • Analysis and evaluation of the designs and studies/reports provided by our contractors.
  • Manage the exchange of technical information between different contractors and the relevant DNO/TO.
  • Support the concept design phase of a project by producing initial SLDs and working with other specialists in the team to develop site layouts etc.
  • Provide technical support to our Project Managers and Procurement team in scheduled meetings with Contractors and BESS suppliers.
  • Support the technical due diligence process required for lender/investor approval.
  • Risk assessing detailed design from a health & safety perspective.
  • Coordinate with the grid development team and become the key interface with DNO/TO through the construction phase.

Managing construction engineering activities (up to commercial operations)

  • Support the HAZID/HAZOP process with our contractors (with support from our Quality, Health, Safety & Environment Manager)
  • Ensure technical RFI’s from our contractors are closed swiftly and accurately.
  • Analysis and evaluation of the detailed designs and studies/reports provided by our contractors.
  • Manage the exchange of technical information between different contractors and the relevant DNO/TO.
  • Provide input to and track the grid code compliance process (ONCP) with support from grid specialists and contractors.
  • Oversee quality management during manufacturing, FAT, delivery and site works.
  • Actively contribute technical input to our routine project management processes, such as risk management and lessons learned.
  • Be the technical authority for the construction phase, ensuring our contractors meet our employers requirements (e.g. issuing and following quality plans, inspection and test plans, site inspections, etc.).
  • Oversight of the C&I aspects of our projects, coordinating and evaluating input from BESS suppliers, BoP Contractors, Optimisers, etc.
  • Drive the testing and commissioning phase of our projects. Coordinating the internal team, our contractors, the DNO/TO and the selected optimiser to safely energise, commission and handover our assets to Asset Operations.
  • Assist the Project Manager with inputs to project schedule, risk register and budget.
  • Evaluate O&M documentation submitted by our contractors, such as as-built drawings.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

A bit about you:

  • You’re an open, clear communicator who enjoys working collaboratively
  • You’re very organised and have a real appetite for technical challenges

  • You’re enthusiastic and curious about the energy storage industry, this helps you keep informed on industry developments.
  • You have a curious mind and pride yourself on always learning, adapting and improving
  • You’re known as a problem solver, someone who enjoys bringing order to chaos and taking quick action to move things forward
  • You’re known for your personal integrity - you don’t cut corners and you’re quick to acknowledge and learn from your mistakes
