Role Summary

The British Museum, founded in 1753, is a leading visitor attraction with a remarkable collection spanning over two million years of human history and culture. Our world-famous collection includes the Rosetta Stone, Egyptian mummies, the Sutton-Hoo finds, and the Lewis Chessmen. We also hold an extensive collection of prints and drawings spanning 600 years, including works by the greatest graphic artists Dürer, Michelangelo and Rembrandt.

As a Project Conservator: Objects, you will be responsible for caring for the collection through a combination of interventive and preventive measures in support of the museum's operating plan. This role requires good general knowledge and some work experience in the care and conservation of 3D objects made from a variety of materials. You will also proactively engage in the public outreach activities of the Department of Collection Care. The role will focus on the conservation of objects across organic and inorganic materials from all curatorial departments for the Museum’s Documentation Project.

Job requirements include a recognised professional conservation qualification to degree level or equivalent with emphasis on the conservation of objects, passing a colour vision test, demonstrable practical skills in the conservation of both organic and inorganic object conservation, understanding of mechanisms involved in material deterioration, knowledge of contemporary principles and practice in preventive conservation, understanding of conservation theory and ethical decision making, and relevant knowledge of health and safety.
